Roger Charles Lyon Jr.

Roger Lyon Obituary

Roger Charles Lyon Jr. was born in 1949 in Burbank, Calif., and spent his childhood in Laurel Canyon in the Hollywood Hills. He lost his life Friday, Oct. 15, 2010. He excelled in age group swimming and continued his competitive swimming at Harvard School, where he set many records. He represented the United States in 1967 in the Pan American Games. He attended the University of Southern California on a full athletic scholarship and was a four-year All-American. After graduation, he spent a year traveling in Europe, then went on to earn his law degree from the University of California Hastings Law School. His summers were spent as a Los Angeles County Lifeguard. Chopper, also known as Chop, moved to Cayucos with his wife, Susan, in 1977. He first worked at the San Luis Obispo County Counsel office. He then went into private practice with his first office in San Luis Obispo, and later in Cayucos. His specialty was land use and municipal law. His passion was conservation of open space for future generations, especially for his beloved grandson. He loved the land in and around his community and was instrumental in conserving much of the coast forever. Roger founded the Cayucos Land Conservancy that successfully preserved four miles of Cayucos coastline and started the process of establishing a greenbelt around Cayucos. His crowning achievement was the conservation easement of the 82,000-acre Hearst Ranch. Chop was passionate about many things - family was on the top of his list. He was an avid pilot of his beloved plane, the Restless Bess. Surfing, biking, snowboarding and traveling were all activities that he loved. Chop lived on a beautiful ranch in Cayucos, where he raised cattle, avocados and oranges and lived life to the fullest. Chop is survived by his wife and life partner of 37 years, Susan; sons Kristopher (Rachel May) and Michael (Joyce); mother, Bess Lyon; sister, Debby Lyon (Jeff Herten); and grandson, Wyatt. He is also survived by a large, loving extended family and many loyal friends from all aspects of his life. He was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Lyon; father, Roger Lyon Sr., and grandparents, Isabel and Michael Harris. A celebration of Chopper''s life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, at the Hearst Ranch Dairy Barn. Contributions in his memory can be made to: Flying Samaritans, P.O. Box 6804, Chandler, AZ 85246; or Wild Cherry Canyon, c/o American Land Conservancy ''" WCC, 369 Pine Street, Ste. 700, San Francisco, CA 94104.

Not sure what to say?

The Lyon and Boetticher families grew up together in Laurel Canyon, and really felt like family. Chop's sister Judy was my Maid of Honor and Godmother to my daughters. We visited the Guest Ranch just before Judy passed away and had a chance to meet Susan and their lovely family. I will remember Chopper always as a four year old bundle of energy, racing everywhere, always sporting a peeling button nose, drooping trunks, and a huge smile. What a lovely man, I can't even begin to imagine the vacancy he will leave behind.
Our love to you all,

Susan and family, our condolences on the untimely loss of your husband Roger. We visited the Guest Ranch Christmas 2007. Roger took my Dad, son and nephew fishing and on a tour of the beautiful land and the view out to the Ocean. It is a memory they cherish. His legacy will live forever in the golden hills of the Central Coast. The Carew, Ackman, & Lewis families.

Chopper-you will always be my hero, and I am honored that Grandma Nini and Aunt Bess told me you always said I was like the daughter you never had. You taught me so much...how to bartend, drive a backhoe and bulldozer, ATVs and horses, how to perfect my pool shot, how to (not) open the gates on the ranch, and so many life lessons that I will never forget. You made me a better person forever; you made alot of people better. You made the world a better place to live. I can honestly say you are one of the greatest people this world will ever see. I am broken hearted that you are gone in body, but I know you will always walk with me in spirit. I promise I will look after everyone in your absence. I knew you for a while, I love you always and I will miss you forever. Love, your little cousin Keiko <3

Words cannot describe how sad I feel for the loss of Roger. He was an exceptional person and I'm so glad I got to spend time with him on several central coast ranches, including he and Susan's. He will always hold a special place in my heart and the heart of many for his great land ethic and care for perserving open space. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

I did not know Roger, but I know his cousin, Susie Harris. She is my neighbor and friend.
Like Roger, she is a kind hearted person and has made this world a better place for all who know her.

My heart and prayers go out for all of Roger's family and friends...special people they are!

RIP Roger, you have given so much and you have inspired so many of us!

I was so sorry to hear about Roger's untimely passing, but have great memories from working with him over the years. I worked in local government, so we crossed paths many times over the last 30 years. The best times were when we were on the same side of a particular issue, but I always had great respect for him when we would need to agree to disagree. He will be missed by many in this county.

My deepest sympathy to Susan and her family. I met Susan and Roger many, many years ago when I lived in Cayucos. My heart felt sympathy to Susan and her family.

I was introduced to Roger and Susan when the boys were very young. Very kind family and loving. Susan did ceramics on the ranch when I knew her and Roger.

Roger will be in my prayers along with Susan and the family.

May God Bless.

"So then, you will know them by their fruits."
Matthew 7:20
What beautiful 'fruits' Roger's life bore - his wonderful family, the lasting legacy of his conservation work, his contributions in helping those less fortunate, his enjoyment of life, and his sweet, joyful countenance that brought a smile to the people around him. His life was a rare kind of gift, and he will be sorely missed. I am better for having known Roger. My deepest condolences to Susan, Michael, and Kristopher.

I worked with Roger at the SLO County Counsel office. He was a gentleman and a scholar and a pleasure to have as a colleague. He helped me on many occasions and my wife and I will truly miss him.... too young to die.
Our sincere condolences to his family.

As a long time resident of Cayucos I often would run into Roger whom always had a smile on his face. I sadly mourn the loss of Roger. We all truly lost one of the "good guys" we meet in our journey. He left us helping others... as all who knew him would expect. Jim Dority

Every single time Roger Lyon entered my life, he made me feel better for living it with him. It is difficult for me to think of any one else to which that applies--even loved ones. I will miss him. My condolences to his entire family.

My condolences to all of Roger's family.
I met him just once, when we were both at an event at the Hearst Ranch. His friendliness, enthusiasm, and love of the central coast were evident even to a brief acquaintance.

Roger was more than a special person -- he was an earthly angel who gave the ultimate sacrifice -- his own life, in a selfless mission to bring a like-spirited medical team to needy persons in Mexico.

Roger's obituary is a beautiful tribute to a gifted man who freely gave of himself to all those whose were fortunate enough to have known him.

Cayucos is in mourning over the loss of a great soul. Roger will be missed. How fitting is his departure - to leave in service of others less fortunate than himself.
Roger, may you rest in the onesness and peace that you deserve.
Blessings to you and your family,
