Rollin Strohman Obituary

Rollin Strohman, 71, a patient and passionate educator, brilliant and self-effacing thinker, practical and focused inventor, proud and loving father, faithful and supportive husband, loyal and generous brother and purveyor and model of integrity, died from acute leukemia Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at home. Rollin was born in 1939 in Geneseo, Ill., and attended country schools until seventh grade. After graduation from high school in Geneseo, he attended the University of Illinois and earned his master''s degree in agricultural engineering. Subsequently, he obtained his Ph.D. from Purdue University, his thesis, integrating biological formulas in the study of emerging field of drying shelled corn. His professional life was dedicated to educating the students of the Department of Agricultural Engineering (BRAE) at Cal Poly. Ready to help students who wanted to learn, his office was always open to the diligent. Quickly adapting to new computer capability, he provided powerful resources to the college. Tirelessly attempting to provide training equipment, even as a Professor Emeritus, he traveled the country to receive grants of surveying and spectroscopic equipment for the benefit of Cal Poly. Even as a young man, Rollin showed an analytic and curious temperament. As a 4-H and FFA member he distinguished himself in projects and demonstrations. At college, he learned to fly a plane and was the first of his family''s generation to attend graduate school. He had a lifelong interest in agriculture, from the experimental plots of corn he planted in Illinois to the GIS mapping of forests in California. With collaborators, he created an online course in Precision Farming. He volunteered as an usher at the Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly, where he especially enjoyed helping with programs for youth. As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Los Osos, he patiently brought it into the computer age. Rollin loved his family very much and was so proud of his children and grandchildren. He spent time with his kids, especially influencing their interests in science, math, computers, agriculture and cross-country running. His primary worry was his wife''s lack of computer skills. Rollin is survived by his wife of 42 years, Clare Strohman of Los Osos; daughter, Deena Strohman of St. Paul, Minn.; son, Trevor Strohman (Anne-Marie); and grandchildren Evan and Natalie of Sunnyvale, Calif.; brothers Roger Strohman of Galesburg, Ill., and Darrell Strohman (Linda) of Geneseo; sister, Joyce Strohman of Geneseo; sister-in-law, Marlene Strohman of Rockford, Ill.; and two uncles Don Strohman (Mary) of Erie, Ill., and Bob Strohman (May) of Tucson, Ariz.; and two beloved cats Joey and Charolette. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Alberta Strohman; and brother, Loren Strohman. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 490 Los Osos Valley Road in Los Osos. A family service will take place in Geneseo, Ill., with the burial of the ashes Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011. In lieu of flowers, he''d be pleased to have donations sent in his honor to Youth Outreach for the Performing Arts Center (YOPAC), Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, CA 93407; or Dept. of Bio-Resources and Agricultural Engineering, Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, CA 93407.

Dear Mrs. Strohman and Family,
My one and only encounter with Rollin was a conversation I had with him just a few months ago. I had learned of his work and passion for agriculture from a mutual friend. Our conversation was centered on his involvement with the development of GPS units. This was the purpose of my call to Rollin as I was looking for a unit to display in a museum here in Eastern Iowa – Heartland Acres Agribition Center. I believe Rollin was in the area for a conference the day he and I spoke and we were trying to figure out if he could come see our Ag Museum while he was in the area.
During the 30 minute conversation I had with Rollin I knew he was a bright and caring person who had passion for life. I kept thinking we’d never finish our conversation. Rollin was telling me about the early days of his work on GPS systems and after the conversation I felt like I knew his whole life story. Our conversation ended with Rollin saying he would see if there were any old versions of the GPS units to send to our museum for a display. In our short conversation he cared enough for what I was asking his help with he was already on board trying to help me out. It is amazing to find this kind of enthusiasm from someone in a 30 minute conversation. The stories he shared with me about his work on GPS have been shared several times with visitors to our museum. I knew Rollin for such a brief moment in life but it was an important moment for me.
Mrs. Strohman and family, it was a pleasure to know your husband and father for the 30 minutes we spent on the phone. Rollin was truly someone special.
Our sympathy to you and your family.

Dear Mrs. Strohman,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

We are fortunate when we meet someone who has a positive impact on our lives. Rollin Strohman was one of those people whom I am grateful to have known. Dr Strohman was the epitome of a gentleman. A role model who projected doing his best in life. Besides expressing how proud he was of his family, Dr Strohman worked passionately as a researcher, implementor of latest technologies (GIS - even in the microscopic/SEM world with Hendrik!), and most significantly as a teacher and mentor. Dr Strohman will be missed.

Our sincere condolences to his entire family.

I met Rollin as a second year undergraduate student while studying biochemistry at Cal Poly. I had come to him with, what at the time was, an intractable problem of how to measure the amount of liquid layer on the lungs of new born infants using stereo- photogrammetric techniques- which is a long way of saying 3D imagining! Rollin spent countless hours working with me in the basement where they housed an old plotter that was the size of jungle gym and had been built in the 1940s! Three summers later we published what was then my first scientific paper it remains to this day the one I am most proud of. It was Rollin who instilled in me what it means to be a true teacher. He was the most patient individual who took hour upon hour to explain things to me over and over again. Today, when I teach my students it is Rolling that continues to inspire me to be a patient and giving teacher. I will miss him dearly.
My love to Clare, Trevor and Deena.

What a wonderfull person, and such an asset to Cal Poly. I have worked with him through so many computer projects over the years (around 33 years), he has always been a delight. I was talking to him just a couple of weeks ago, I can't beleive he is gone. I will miss him. My sincere sympathy to his family.

Clare and family,
I have many pleasant memories of the time I shared with Rollin as a fellow graduate student at Purdue. He was the consummate professional and a credit to our profession. I am glad that I was able to visit with him during the ASABE meeting in Louisville last month and share news of our respective families. I will miss him greatly. You have my deepest sympathies. It is my prayer that God will comfort you as you grieve your loss and that Rollin will be joyously welcomed as he joins the host of saints that have gone before us. I will continue to keep you and Rollin in my prayers.

I wanted to express my sympathy to Rollin's family. I first met him when we were graduates students in the Purdue Agricultural Engineering Department in the late 1960's. Then we'd visit at ASAE National Meetings. So it was good to reconnect again when Rollin spent a sabbatical leave at the John Deere Technical Center in Moline where I worked. He had probably the most wide ranging interests of any engineer I've ever met. I'm sure he was an enthusiastic teacher. All his friends will miss him. Sincerely, David Smith, East Moline, IL

Dear Mrs. Strohman,
I am sorry to hear of Rollin's passing. He had a remarkable life and career.
Rollin and I spoke a number of years ago about the Strohman family history.
I provided him with the Strohman family history including the relatives in Sigourney, Iowa who came over from Germany in the 1800's. I have that family history if your family members would like a copy.
Rollin looks remarkably like my grandfather Leo Strohman. The Strohman genes must be strong.
With my sympathy,

Clare, Deena, and Trevor,

i was saddened to read about Rollin's passing in this morning's Tribune. Rollin exemplified the core values that make up what a true "man" should be. He loved his family, was dedicated to his career, served his God, and cared deeply about other people. He will truly be missed by the wide range of people that he touched during his lifetime. I realize that words cannot really do much at this time, but i just wanted all of you to know that you are in my family's thoughts and prayers as you go thru this difficult time.
