Ronald Kelsey Obituary

Ronald "Tuffy" Arthur Kelsey was born in July 1945 to Emily Cooper and Ronald C. Kelsey, and died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010. He grew up with his siblings, Roger and Laloni in the Bay area. As a small child, he had a dog and chickens and was always helping his father. His father operated a charter bus service and Tuffy started his mechanical career testing batteries and fluid levels. Tuffy was always a proficient mechanic while he was in Acalanes High School. He earned a one-year scholarship to Contra Costa College, where he studied welding and competed in wrestling. He then transferred to Humboldt State for four years of study, where he was awarded his teaching credential. He taught at Humboldt for a year. He had been hired by Lucia Mar Unified School District in 1971 and pulled into Grover City driving that green truck of his. He taught auto shop for about four years. In 1975, he started work at Buzz Johnson''s in San Luis Obispo. As the ''new guy,'' he started on motor homes, which is where he got his start. In no time at all, his talents showed through and he quickly was promoted to manager. While at Johnson''s, he developed a race team, where his race car, Good Ol'' 53, was born. He ran the race car under Johnson''s sponsorship until 1980. Tuffy worked at Johnson''s through 1981, when they went out of business. In 1982,Tuffy''s Automotive was born at the Brisco yard. Prior to this grand event, Tuffy had been working out of his garage on 13th St. in Grover Beach. In the late 1960s, Tuffy Met Judy Leeman, and together they raised her son, Aaron Young. In 1983, Tuffy and Judy parted, friends, then in 1989, Tuffy vowed his commitment with the love of his life, Sherry Turton. Tuffy always had friends he was helping or they were helping him. The yard became a second home and an important gathering place for many. Tuffy was meticulous and always cautious about checking and double checking everything. He did this, both out of the love for what he did and out of the sincere desire to complete each task safely. Along the way, Tuffy touched many lives with his sincere desire to be helpful. He was generous to a fault, and will be missed and remembered by many. Besides his wife, Sherry, Tuffy is survived by stepson, John; brother, Roger; sister, Laloni; and sister-in-law, Sue. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at the First Presybterian Church, 1830 Farroll Road in Grover Beach.

Cheers to a man that had a renewed love for life after his close call heart attack last year. He will be missed by many and will always be in the heart of those that he touched by kindness and who were blessed with the shared wisdom his life had brought him.
God bless his family. I will miss you my friend.

Can't believe you are gone, Tuffy. When we pull out of our driveway, you were right across the way. When I walked in the mornings, your hand always flew out the window with a smile, and you were always there to help with our trailers throughout the years. You are sorely missed friend.

Tuffy was a light for me in my life. I can still see his casual stroll over to my RV where he would listen to my concerns and then a gentle smile would appear with the soft words of "we'll get you back on the road in no time." Conversations would cover dogs and the vehicles of our youth but you always knew you were talking with a sincere gentle heart not hardened by life. He always exhibited patience and goodness to those he was around. His presence in our community will truly be missed. Please accept my deepest condolences and I pray your hearts will be filled with peace.

We only met Tuffy the week before he passed away. He instantly recognized that my dad needed kindness and patience. Tuffy meticulously explained how he was going through the RV electrical system, engine, propane, everything. He was so kind to my dad and the motor home trip was a wonderful gift for my dad's upcoming 86th birthday. Our sincerest sympathy to the family and encouragement that we will all be together again in Heaven with our Lord and Saviour Jesus.

We've done business with him for several years now and it seems it was just last week that I saw him and his big smile. When he gave me one of his business cards, he was so proud that his friend had design them for him. I always looked forward to seeing him every month when I paid my storage fees. What are we going to do without him? He was one of the few great guys, helping me through the grief when my husband passed unexpectedly. I will surely miss him.

Tuffy, we will greatly miss you. Not only did you take care of our motor homes for 25 years that registered over 250,000 miles, you also saved me(Lillian) when I backed into a tree and you did the repair to my trunk at a fraction of the cost quoted by an auto repair shop. You were a multi-talented "diamond in the rough"!!

There are few if any mechanics that had a real sense of what a true service minded caring person can deliver. Tuffy was even more that he was an artist!

Tuffy was not only a 'great' mechanic but he was also a great friend, no matter if he was busy with something else he'd drop everything to help you. I not only store my 5th wheel up there, he'd do all the repair to both units. He's going to dearly missed by me and many-many others. Rudy n Phyllis Scholl

I was lucky enough to have known Tuffy since I was a young child. He worked for my dad at Buzz Johnsons. He was always good to me when I came in my dad's shop. He continued to take care of me and my family for almost 40 years. There will never be another like him. Thank you, Tuffy, I will always miss you and be grateful for all you have done for me.

"Tuffy" Mr. Kelsey was my High School Automotive teacher in 1972. I just had the honor of seeing him August 28, 2010 while on vacation in Arroyo Grande. Seeing that green chevy pick-up sure brought back memories. I'm glad I took a picture with him before returning home. He once asked me why I call him Mr. Kelsey and not "Tuffy" I said it's out of respect. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

It was so sad to hear of the sudden death of Tuffy. He was so nice to me and my kids. About 10 years ago I was delivering auto parts and met Tuffy. One day he noticed that I was sad. I told hime that I had no place to live, he told me not to worry. He had arranged for me and my kids to stay in a travel trailer on his property. I stayed for about a week until I found a place. I will always remember his kind heart.

Tuffy has always been there when we needed him to look at our RV. He was always kind and fair to us. For such a busy man he would always try to get the job done so we could make our next campout or trip to the lake. He will be truly missed.

Tuffy took excellent care of my RV and my Ranger Truck. We shared war stories about our heart surgeries and he felt so lucky to have a second chance after things looked so desperate. As I told Susan when I spoke to her the other day, God must have wanted a good mechanic who also was a great person. My dearest sympathy to Tuffy's family at this very trying time. I will think of Tuffy every time I drive up Brisco Road past his place.

What a loss.

I almost drove through the first time. Really glad I didn't.
No service manager in clean shirt and tie.
Just Tuffy under the hood or trouble shooting a
problem no one else could handle.
He would alway's say "I'll Take Care of You"
Wow ! A man of his word.
Rest in Peace Tuffy.
Your a Good Man !!

What a loss. The first time I took our motor home into his yard. I though about driving on. Just because it wasn't a typical repair place. You weren't greeted by a service manager in a clean shirt and tie. Tuffy was under the hood or trouble shooting an electrical problem . He was really good at that.
He would say "I'll Take care of You".
Wow ! He alway's did !!
Rest in Peace Tuffy
Your a good Man.

Tuffy sure took great care of our RV for us. He would never let us take off on a trip until he was satisfied that "you two ladies" were in tip top shape. He never overcharged for his expert service, if anything, Tuffy undercharged for all the little extras he would always do. It was a wonderful feeling driving into his shop and knowing he was going to treat us with respect and his quiet humor, as ladies. We never found that kind of service anywhere out on the road. If I could make it to Calif I would be there for his funeral. Tuffy made a huge difference in this world. Thank you Tuffy. Love ya. Those two ol' ladies ..."kanme".

Tuffy was always so great when I took my car to him for the past 7 years. He was HONEST, hardworking and just a really wonderful person. He was a good, good guy. I will miss that Scruffy-Tuffy voice of his. This world is definately diminished by the loss of such a loving and kind person. My heart goes out to his family.
