Susie Benskin Obituary

Susie Frances Norma Benskin, 85, widow of Stan Benskin, died peacefully Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010. She was at her home at the Oaks in San Luis Obispo listening to one her favorites, "The Three Tenors in Rome." Stan and Susie loved their 30 years in Morro Bay and were active as Friends of the Morro Bay Library. They spent many hours playing golf and helping with golf events. She taught junior golf and volunteered at the Natural History Museum. She loved animals, jazz, opera and the Central Coast and was known for her one liners. Susie lived with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) for eight years and was disappointed that an aggressive thyroid cancer would be the cause of her demise. She looked forward to spending the day with her ''friends,'' the staff at French Hospital in Day Stay, during her frequent blood transfusions and adored her nurse and ''buddy,'' Helen. Beautiful surroundings and the fun folks at the Oaks made her final two and a half years quite enjoyable. Susie is survived by her son, Jeff of New Orleans, La.; daughter, Debbie of South Pasadena, Calif.; and grandsons Malcolm and Alex. Remembrances, in lieu of flowers, should go to the AA and MDS International Foundation, www.AAMDS.org.

Susie was my mother-in-law. She was a dear, sweet person - always remembering birthdays and special occasions. Susie and Stan sent always photos, shared interesting newspaper articles or sent a note to share a thought. I miss them both.

I am a RN at French Hospital. I have cared for Susie on many occasions. She always greated me with a hug. She could have wallowed in self pity but instead chose to great each day as if it was the best day of her life. I have learned from you, susie and I will miss you!!!

It was a pleasure to know Susie. She was kind and sweet with a dry sense of humor. I will miss her at The Oaks.

We were saddened to read today of Susie's passing. We enjoyed many musical performances together over the years as well as the annual 4th of July BBQ in Morro Bay. We looked for her recently at San Luis Obispo's first Live HD Broadcast from the Met because we new of her love for opera - though not sure she would have enjoyed Das Rheingold all that much. May she be in a place where she will always enjoy beautiful music. With sincere sympathy and a warm embrace, Virginia & Fulvio de Laval
