The C.I.F. Southern Section Track & Field Championships were held May 21, 1949 at Wilson High School in Long Beach. Charlie Mitchell competed in the 220-yard dash, representing Coast Union High School and San Luis Obispo County. Charlie placed 4th in the final event, which was won in a time of 21.5 seconds. The great Olympian Jessie Owens was timed in 20.7 as a prep athlete in the 200-yard event in 1933. Charlie Mitchell was an extraordinary athlete.

I am so sorry for your loss. Charlie was a very special man and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was part of my family's life for as long as I can remember my Mom used to babysit him when he was a youngster. I remember him dancing every dance at my parents 50th anniversary he was the life of the party. May you find comfort knowing he is with his love in heaven.

My first memory of Charlie was a a native sons dance about 25 years ago. There was this old guy tearing up the dance floor with a beautiful young brunette, who I later learned was his daughter. They could really dance. I hope I can always picture his smiling eyes in my mind as well as I can today, going to miss him.

Charlie was always the happiest man in the room. He would dance like no one was watching, sing like no one was listening and offer a helping hand to any and all that may have needed it. He will be missed dearly by all that knew him.

What can I say about the "CHAZ", one of a kind! The funniest smooth talking guy with a little hip action and groove! Some of my BEST childhood memories are with both Charlie and Iona! He will be truly missed! I'm happy knowing he is with Iona! I'm sure the first words from her was "what took you so long?"
Debra, you truly were your dads hero. You stepped up to plate and took care of him! I'm proud of you and I'm sure he was to!

I believe Charlie Mitchell was given the middle name of Wilbur in remembrance of Wilbur Wright of the famous Wright Brothers of aviation history. Once again, I am relying on memory but I believe the Negranti family was connected to the Wright family in some way.

Charlie Mitchell was one of the most naturally gifted high athletes born in San Luis Obispo county. In my own humble opinion, I would rank Charlie with the legendary Ed Brown who graduated from San Luis Obispo High School circa 1947. Charlie Mitchell may have been the fastest 200 meter sprinter in county history. His obituary did not mention being involved at the college level, but I believe he attended St. Mary's College in Moraga, California for a short time. He once told me a story of participating in a C.I.F. regional track meet in Southern California, wearing baseball shoes. Over and above his extraordinary athleticism, Charlie Mitchell was a grand human being - friendly and genuine to the core. His passing is a great loss for San Luis Obispo county and to his family and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
