Ellen M. Baer, born in the state of New York in 1919, died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, in the company of her family at her home in Atascadero. Ellen spent her long life taking care of other people. With her husband, Milton Baer, who died in 2009, she helped to raise eight children and their children. She kept an open home for all, and enjoyed providing homemade bread for most of her life. As librarian at Lewis Avenue School in Atascadero for over 10 years, Ellen enjoyed matching young readers with books they would love, rarely needing to consult the catalogue, but instead walking with a patron straight to the exact location of the book on the shelf. Ellen was active in St. William''s parish for all of the 63 years she lived in Atascadero. In retirement, she served on the school board, volunteered with Loaves and Fishes, Senior Nutrition and El Camino Homeless Organization, and supported countless charities and organizations working for social justice and environmental sustainability. Ellen is survived by her eight children Peggy Rolison, Martha Marchand, Alan Baer, Art Baer, Larry Baer, Celia Bewley, Winnie Baer and Patty French and their families; two sisters Julia Goelz and Lisa Lewis; brother, Bill Hurley; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at St. William''s Catholic Church, 6410 Santa Lucia in Atascadero.
