Ernest Righetti Obituary

Ernest Robert Righetti, devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, San Luis Obispo native son and agricultural pioneer, departed this life peacefully Sunday evening, Jan. 26, 2014. He was 97 years young. Born to Guido and Elizabeth Righetti in 1916 at the Edna Valley house he called home his entire life, Ernest (Ernie to all who met him) graduated from Independence School, San Luis High School and Cal Poly. He partnered with his father for many years in dairy and cattle ranching. Demonstrating remarkable foresight in the 1960s, Ernie transformed the family business into an avocado-growing enterprise, first having built the largest privately-owned reservoir in the county. The Righetti Ranch soon developed into one of the most substantial avocado acreages in California. Always the optimist, he lit up any room he entered with his positive attitude and radiant smile. The ultimate renaissance man, possessed of singular intellectual curiosity, Ernie would gladly discourse on any subject, domestic or foreign. Not only a masterful farmer, rancher, welder and carpenter, he was also an expert catskinner, constructing roads, house pads, orchard terraces and fire lines for public and private clients from Big Sur to Ventura, Calif. He had a special passion for hunting, both in North America and in more remote places like Afghanistan, Nepal, and Mongolia. Always a gracious gentleman, he would spare any moment to help family, friends and strangers alike. A member of the Mountainbrook Community Church, Ernie gave back continuously to the entire community, having served with distinction on the boards of the Farm Supply Company, SLO County Farm Bureau, SLO County Range Improvement Association, SLO County Cattlemen's Association and California Avocado Commission. He also was a member of the SLO Sportsmen's Club, Arroyo Grande Sportsmen's Club, Native Sons of the Golden West and California Deer Association. Ernie represented the gold standard in human decency, compassion for the less fortunate and kindness to all. He will forever live in the hearts of all who had the good fortune to know him. The family extends its deepest appreciation to the caregivers who gave Ernie so much of themselves. Ernest Righetti is survived by his wife of 63 years, Susan; sons Craig (Marlene), Donald (Kristin), Scott and David (Tami); as well as grandchildren Tricia, Clint (Cristina), Lauren, Shaun, Jonny, Dalen and Gavin. The Righetti family is pleased to invite family and friends to a public celebration of Ernie's life and luncheon at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at the Alex Madonna Exposition Center, 100 Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be sent for the support and maintenance of the Cal Poly official weather station at: www.itrc.org/Righetti/ Dad, we will always love you and be guided by your wisdom!

Thank You Uncle Ernie for being the best uncle a niece could ever have! You lived life passionately and inspired me to do the same! You made me laugh until my belly hurt making me realize just how important laughter is in our everyday lives! You loved me unconditionally and were always there for me! I can see you now in heaven, smiling & laughing, sharing joy with everyone! Your faith and personal relationship with Jesus Christ was, is and always will be that which motivates others to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior that we may each receive God's gift of eternal life. All of our bodies will die someday yet if we have accepted Jesus into our hearts as our Lord and Savior we will live forever with Jesus in heaven! See you soon!

Scott and Family,
I would like to pay my respects to your family on reading the obituary of your father. I had the pleasure of meeting your Dad when I visited the Righetti Ranch in the late eighties. He was a renaissance man who left a family legacy which will endure for generations. Here is a photo I took at the time.

One of my favorite Cousin Party memories is of Ernie showing my young son around his trophy room. Jeremy's eyes were as wide as saucers and Ernie was ticked by his reaction. He was like that.

Interviewed Mr. Righetti in 2002 for a CP project on farming. As I was leaving he pointed out the huge cottonwood tree by the house he said he had planted 75 yrs ago when it was the size of a pencil. Standing next to the tree he began to recite Joyce Kilmer's poem "Trees". I was touched by his complete rendition of it. Then he added, "I'm trying to teach my 3 yr old grandson that poem so when he starts school he can show off!"
May he rest in peace near his beloved trees.

Ernie was my husband's (Bud Wright) First Cousin. When a newlywed, I first met Ernie and Susan in 1950. Since that time, they have always been so close to our hearts. It was wonderful to have had time with Ernie last summer at a small "Cousin Party" in Cuesta Park. It's been such a blessing to have known Ernie, Susan and their very special family. Many shared events during the passing years. Many blessings and much love to you -- each and everyone.

There are people who you meet in life's passage that truly inspire you as human beings. Ernie was that to Ed and I. The Righetti family has always been such dear wonderful friends to me and my family. I pray for you all because it is so hard to lose someone that has been such a big part of all of your lives. His lust and wisdom of life will live with all of us. I am glad he is at peace with his maker.

We were so sorry to hear of Ernie's passing this week. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you work through the loss of your patriarch. We will certainly miss, as we have been missing, seeing him out here on the tractor, the Jeep, or whatever piece of equipment he happened to be using on any given day. Always a worker; always an example of true grit. God bless you all.
