Art (Joe Arthur De Alba), age 86, passed away in his home on Christmas Day 2013 after a long illness. He was born October 3, 1927 in San Francisco where he met his future wife of 64 years, Evelyn Jo Williams. For the past few decades Art and Evelyn have lived at the home Art built in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn and son Jim and his wife Debbie; Granddaughter Julie and Great Granddaughter Shea; a brother Ben De Alba Sr., and Sister Josephine Labrado. He was preceded in his death by his Father Leopoldo, Mother Enedina Santana, and three Brothers: Babe (Richard), Al and Lee De Alba.
Art graduated from Mission High school in 1946 and joined the Navy where he was stationed in the Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands South Pacific where the US was conducting nuclear tests. He served on the Lead Destroyer Tender USS Dixie as the ship's expert in radio and sonar. After serving Art lead a successful career as an electronics technician on the SF Peninsula retiring as Service Manager overseeing staff and operations. In his spare time he enjoyed vacations with his wife and friends, his artwork, visiting friends and numerous family members and visiting and working at his cabin in Boulder Creek. He built his first cabin in 1956 and ultimately purchased nearby property and built his retirement home where he resided with his wife until his passing. All who visited knew Art loved viewing "his" trees from the deck or window. Art had numerous friends from boyhood and high school, work, neighborhood, church and many others he had met in his lifetime. He was known by most as the kindest person they had ever met, an honest, loyal, loving, devoted, giving, supportive person like no other. He had a very kind heart and quick wit and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Service and Celebration of Life for Art will be held on January 9, 2014 at the Lucie Stern Community Center, 1305 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94301. The Service will be at 11:00 AM and the Celebration of Life from noon until 2 PM. Donations (in lieu of flowers) can be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County.
