Aptos artist Betsy Roeth died in Switzerland on August 21, 2013 while traveling. Betsy lived in Aptos since 1993, where she established a painting and ceramics studio. She was an accomplished watercolor artist whose works hung in Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, and museums and private collections throughout the world. In her twenties, she worked with architect Joseph Esherick and landscape architect Douglas Baylis, and was engaged to the architect Gordon Drake at the time of his death. She graduated with an art degree and teacher certification from UC Berkeley, and taught school for many years. Betsy married architect Ellis Kaplan, founder of Kaplan, McLaughlin & Diaz in San Francisco. The couple had two children, Ian and Tirza. Betsy married Donald Wilhem in 1967 and they were happily married until his death in 2013. Betsy's daughter Tirza predeceased her in 2006. Betsy is survived by her son Ian Kaplan and daughter-in-law Kate Butler, her grandsons Alexander Kaplan and Jared Benjamin, her granddaughter by affection Cascade Wilhelm, and her many friends and relatives.
