Donald Paul Gluntz
Sept. 25, 1948 ~ Dec. 22, 2013
Resident of Soquel
Donald Paul Gluntz passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, December 22. He was vacationing on the beautiful Garden Isle of Kauai with his partner of 14 years, Carol McGrath, and his sons, Paul and son Jon, and his daughter in law Belinda. Don resided in Soquel, California for the past 30 years.
Don was born in Florissant, Missouri on September 25, 1948. The Gluntz Family moved to Stockton, California when Don was 10 years of age. They moved to Visalia, California in 1962. When Don was a junior in high school his parents moved the family to a small farm in Ivanhoe that had acreage in Thompson grapes. The entire family helped out on the farm pruning and tying and one of Don's jobs was sulpher dusting the grapes. He attended Mt. Whitney High School in Visalia where he earned the All American title in wrestling and graduated in 1966. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in chemistry at University of California at Berkeley in 1970. Don was employed immediately after graduating Cal at Motorola in Boise, Idaho. He took several steps along the high tech trail working for many companies, including Sierra Semiconductor and Arch Chemicals in sales.
Don retired from Arch in 2000. He lived life with passion and always had a big smile on his face and a bounce in his step. He enjoyed playing golf with his golf buddies at DeLaveaga. Other joys in Don's life were vacationing with Carol or driving his "toys" - - his Viper and his tractor and teaching his sons about remodeling or working on their own cars. If Don wasn't golfing or vacationing, he was chopping wood or helping someone get a project completed.
Carol's fondest memory of Don is this last summer's 3,000-mile southwest road trip, when Don and Carol got to visit seven states. He was so excited that their last stop was going to be the Grand Canyon on Carol's birthday. His son, Paul has many fond memories but his best memories are of all the long father son talks they had on many different topics. Son Jon's fondest memory of his father is how excited his father was that he was graduating from Cabrillo Culinary School. When creating his final project he served flambé cherries for desert. When Jon lit the flambé, it created quite an audience as the desert flamed up just a bit higher than normal!
Don is preceded in death by his father, Elmer Gluntz and sister, Lois Williams.
He leaves his partner, Carol, and his two sons, Paul and Jon, and his daughter in law, Belinda. Also in his family are his wonderful mother, Ester, 91 years of age, his sister, Sharon and husband, James Smart; his brother, Gary and wife, Debbie; his sister, Barbara and husband, Dennis Mills; and sister, Susan and husband, Mark Stephen. He also leaves many nieces and nephews: Kirk and Kevin Smart, Christina Williams, Nicole Kennedy, Jacqueline and Jeannette Gluntz, Kathryn Gluntz and great nephew, Braydon Behr, and Mark and Conner Stephen.
Don's service will be on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Mehl's Colonial Chapel, 222 East Lake Avenue in Watsonville at 2:00 p.m. A celebration of Don's life will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Watsonville.
Don's sons are requesting that family and friends may donate to any organization of their choice in memory of their father. Carol requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to
