Joseph G. Myers, a decorated veteran of World War II, died Thursday, July 24, 2014. He was 92.
Mr. Myers was born Feb. 2, 1922 in Lawrence, MA. He joined the Army in 1940, served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII and earned a Purple Heart at the Battle of Guadalcanal. After being wounded, he then spent the remainder of the war in Watsonville as a cryptanalyst serving at Camp McQuaide. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a sergeant.
After the war he lived in Watsonville for the rest of his life and served 17 years with the Watsonville Police Department, worked 15 years for the Santa Cruz County Department of Agriculture and worked as a private detective for four years. He married the love of his life, Helen Myers, in 1962.
He had many interests. He studied military history and wrote about World War II battles for the Register-Pajaronian. He was a ham radio operator and aided emergency efforts after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake; he was a member of the Pajaro Valley Rod and Gun Club; studied local history, especially local law enforcement. He was also a past member of the Watsonville VFW, the Elks Lodge and American Legion Post 121.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Arthur Myers and sister Norene Segebarth, and his mother-in-law Maria Stone. He is survived by his wife Helen, his son Steven Myers and wife Kristy of Moss Landing; his daughter Dianne Myers of Idaho; his daughter Caroline Howard and her husband Douglas of Minnesota; his sister-in-law Lucille Giorvas of Santa Clara, seven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and many other family members. He was also very close to his cousins, nephews and nieces.
A graveside memorial and military service will be held at Pajaro Valley Catholic Cemetery, 2401 E. Lake Ave. in Watsonville, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1. Visitation will be held on Wednesday and Thursday from 5-9 p.m. at Mehl's Colonial Chapel at 222. E. Lake Ave. in Watsonville.
