Christopher Levy Obituary

Christopher Alan Levy
October 29, 1990 - June 24, 2013
Resident of Scotts Valley
Chris lived his life with a curious eye, and never accepted the status quo. He was an intensely loyal, honest, bright and straightforward young man who spoke his mind. He worked hard to understand things that most people just accepted, so that he could fully understand for himself. His need to explore life led him into many long inquisitive conversations with a wide variety of people, and a lifelong quest to understand himself and the world around him. He sought, respected, and returned truthfulness in all aspects of his life, and you did not have to guess where you stood with him. Although not always easy, his challenging of the 'norms' of life was very refreshing.
Chris was born on October 29, 1990 to loving parents Marty Levy and Jennifer Etow. He was joined later by his brother Brett, his junior by 2 years. He loved playing sports. While playing for Scotts Valley Little League, Chris' fondest memory was winning the Northern California Division state championship on the 9/10 year old team. During his years at Scotts Valley High School Chris played basketball, was a quarterback for the football team, and played 4 years of Varsity baseball as a pitcher and outfielder. Chris followed his passion for baseball into college. He played for Ohlone College, and Cabrillo College. During his time at Cabrillo Chris reinvented himself as a side arm pitcher, and transferred to UC Davis as a relief pitcher where he was to graduate with a B.A. in Communications this summer. His intensity and competitiveness was unmatched, both on and off the field. His loyalty, love and friendships were equaled by his honesty and straightforward attitude. Chris was also an incredibly talented writer, often critiqued by his teachers as, "the best writing efforts I have ever received from a student". Although a challenge to produce, his finished results were often extraordinarily beautiful.
Chris is survived by his parents Marty Levy and Jennifer Etow, his brother Brett Levy and half-brother Connor Schelstraete, who he lovingly coached with great patience. He is also survived by his step father Carlin Schelstraete, his stepmom Annie Levy, and his step family Jacob, Clair and Molly Adams. He has four very proud Levy uncles and Aunts, many loving cousins, and four loving Etow aunts and uncles, and many Etow cousins. His Grandma Etow held a special place in Chris's heart. Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents Alan and Jean Levy, and his Grandpa Shig Etow.
We all love you so very much Chris. We will miss your sweet smile and your incredible presence. We have all gained and learned things from you in your short life that we will carry in our hearts and minds forever. Rest easy. Rest in peace.
Services will be held for Chris on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St. in Santa Cruz, beginning at 2 pm.

Chris, you keep visiting me in my dreams; you've reassured me every time you are in a better place. Thanks for saying hi, there isn't a day I don't think of you and everything you taught me growing up. There hasn't been an athletic event or exercise I've participated in that I haven't had you talk me through it.

I ran in a relay race from San Francisco to Calistoga, 200 miles and 30 hours with a team. Your initials were place on my arm and pushed me through over 20 miles running and 4 hours of sleep.
Sports are engrained into my life, as yours, and I can't thank you enough for how many times you pushed me in practice or taught me about teamwork and giving a second effort.

I miss you, friend, brother.

Marty, Jennifer, Brett,

My heart broke for all of you when I heard the news today. My mind went back to the block parties we used to have and how much fun it was to play with Chris and Brett. They are both such wonderful kids. I am truly so very sorry.

I'm so emotionally touched in a variety of ways by hearing this loss. My heart extends to the entire family, the siblings, and parents, his most recent buddies who I'm sure are at a loss... My prayers and hopes for healing and peace to understand why such a young, talented, boy/ young man had to die too soon. I remember him from baseball and my boys played with him as well. I have deep compassion and sympathy for all of the people who loved and knew him. My heart is heavy...

I had the good fortune to know this young man as my son's friend. He was always so polite and interested in what we had to say. AJ has always spoken so highly of Chris and said he not only is a deep thinker, but a deep feeler. The service today was a testimony to the countless lives touched by this extraordinary young man.

I had the joy of coaching Chris on our Competitive Soccer Team, the Titans, and Rec Soccer Team, the Sharks. Chris was a terrific athlete, and when motivated, he was unstoppable. Whenever I ran into Chris after those seasons, he would always come up to me respectfully to shake my hand with a big smile and say "hi coach". We will all miss that beaming genuine smile and good, warm heart!

Chris was one of the deepest friends I knew. I could always rely on him for a good long talk no matter what the situation. We would talk about the meaning of life and he never ceased to amaze me. I first met chris is third grade, with his bull cut parted down the middle and his big goofy smile. We went through school together and by high school graduation we had been through many crazy and exciting times. Chris was and always will be one of the most hilarious and spontaneous and interesting people I have ever met. I still have stories of Chris that will stick with me forever and although you aren't with us anymore Chris and I feel such sadness, I have such bright memories of you to carry with me. I wish we could sit one last time on your porch at your old house downtown and reminisce about the good old times. I love you Chris. Thanks for all the light and knowledge you brought to me over the years <3
