James Mullen Obituary

James Mullen
May 18, 1952 - January 8, 2013
Resident of Santa Cruz
Jim Mullen, father, son, brother, friend, and teacher, died at Dominican Hospital on Jan. 8 after a brief illness. Jim was born sixty years ago in New York City and then moved with his family as a teenager to Los Angeles. As a young boy, he was instructed to " take care of your younger sister!" That began a theme in his life of wanting to help and protect others. He developed this skill further in college, as the director of a 24-hour telephone crisis center. Jim prided himself on being the giver of sage advice to everyone in his circle of family and friends. When he moved to Santa Cruz in the eighties, he began a graphic design business called "The Type Factory", where he was known as someone who cared not only about doing the best, most professional job he could for his clients, but also as someone who would offer personal support and friendship. Jim was most proud of his son Taylor who inherited his dad's natural ability with a computer, and has now grown to be a young man Microsoft couldn't wait to hire as soon as he graduated from college. Jim was also proud of his role as a teacher of Tai Chi here in Santa Cruz at the Academy of Martial Arts. He developed his martial arts skills starting in his early twenties, having been influenced by Bruce Lee who was a neighbor in Los Angeles. Jim would catch glimpses of him training intensely in his backyard, and then he carried that same passion when he became a teacher himself. Jim will be remembered as someone who always did the very best job he could and as someone you could call on, with a problem day or night. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, January 27 1-4 at The Lodge 552 Bean Creek Rd Scotts Valley, For details, call (831) 239-9406. In lieu of flowers, contributions are encouraged to another organization that was close to Jim's heart; The Dance of the Deer Foundation.

Dear Jim, You are truly missed and oh so appreciated. Working with several different Companies since you've been gone, has truly affirmed your talent and human kindness. I have not found one person that has 25% of the abilities and talents you possessed. I'm still looking and if you have a moment after a good chuckle at my struggle, please point me to someone. A sign! Yeah send me a sign! You were really good at signs!! LOL

About four years ago I had the pleasure of taking taijiquan from Jim at the Academy of Martial Arts. From my short three months that I had spent learning from him, I discovered a man of many talents, a great sense of humor, and to this day I feel blessed to have met him. I just happened to look at the AMA website tonight and saw his name/bio and thought I'd look him up and see how he was doing - what a shock to discover he passed away. My condolences to his family and friends, and may he rest in peace.

Jim, was my friend...he put all my words together, even if it was a small letter. We would talk about our son's Taylor 25, & Patrice 24. What an amazing person. Jim, help me with some of our first graphics jobs with our then new bus. some 18 years ago Uncle Randawg's famous BBQ Sauce. RIP my friend. God Bless you and your family. I miss you always your friend Veronica Clifford. This is Jim's work and I am so proud of it again thank you my friend.

What a kind, sweet man. I was never an easy client, and yet he always was so patient, helpful, cheerful, and always spoke so well of me in my absence. Santa Cruz lost a much-loved citizen and business member. We both loved Garamond, and he could kern it exquisitely.

It is a personal loss for me. Jim was my friend. I hadn't seen him since I moved away from the upper west side in August and was surprised I didn't get a returned call recently. He will be missed. He gave me some of my first graphics jobs when I came to Santa Cruz to live over 18 years ago.

Jim was a good man who always treated his friends with such warmth when he would run into them, I being one of them. I had known Jim for well over 25 years and he would never forget a face or a good memory surrounding it. Recently probably a couple of weeks back we ran into each other and he reminded me of the times his son Taylor and my daughter now 25 used to play together in kindergarten, very sweet stories I thought. I will always remember Jim as happy and positive and willing to give anyone the time of the day and what a great laugh he had! RIP in the arms of the angels ol'friend.
