John G. Meyers passed away on January 8, 2013 at the Watsonville Community Hospital after a short illness. He was 88.
John was born on October 31, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois. He married Mary Joan Daley on September 28, 1946 and moved to Watsonville California in 1953 with his wife and their daughter, Carol Ann. He moved to Manteno, Illinois in 2006, but recently moved back to Watsonville last year.
John was a World War II Veteran serving as a combat engineer in India, Burma, and China. After serving in the military, he began a career in civil service. He retired from civil service after a long employment as an Inspector at Fort Ord . He worked for a short time at the Pajaro Train Station in 1953 as a mechanic. He was a parts driver for Marty Franich Ford in Watsonville during the 1990s.
John enjoyed staying active in the community. He is past member of numerous clubs and organizations including the Lions Club, Italian Catholic Federation, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. John volunteered in the Catholic Church for decades. Many will remember him for calling Bingo for 30 years at the Kennedy Center, St. Francis.
John also loved to stay active at home. He loved to tinker in his workshop and make worliegigs. He was a long time mechanic. He took many camping trips to the beach with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Joan Meyers; grandchildren, Rachael Singleton, Jonathan Fontana, and Stephanie Fontana; great grandson, Tyler Singleton; sister, Teresa Hibbs; son-in law, James Fontana and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Helen Batok; daughter, Carol Fontana and sisters, Mary Kavis and Harriet Dent.
A memorial Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be given on Monday, January 14 at the Valley Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Mehl's Colonial Chapel was entrusted with funeral arrangements.
