John Stenovich Obituary

John Graham Stenovich DDS May 20, 1936-August 31, 2012 Resident of Santa Cruz Born in Madera, California to John and Lucile Stenovich, John Graham Stenovich graduated from Madera High School in 1954, where he played football, wrestled and was also student body president. He found a love for music, as he played the trumpet and had a jazz band that played during the summers. After high school, he attended Occidental College and was a member of the SAE fraternity. After three years at Occidental, he went to Dental School at the SF College of Physicians and Surgeons for four more years. It seemed almost fitting that he passed at the beginning of Labor Day weekend, because he did so much in his life with his work, as well as helping others to get jobs themselves. In 1961, he moved to Capitola and opened his first one-man office, before moving to Aptos several years later and practicing for 42 years. His respect for his profession, his patients, and his staff was legendary. John had a sense of humor and irreverence, as well as professional integrity and loyalty, and he provided all of his patients with the best. He was an active member of the Monterey Bay Dental Society and chaired the Peer Review Committee for many years. John loved to teach and was on the Dental Hygiene faculty at Cabrillo for 40 years, training hundreds of future hygienists. He considered his students to be his friends and family, and he took great pride in providing them an education as well as perspectives on life. He also taught at Western Career College in San Jose for three years. Even with a very busy life, John always made time for his favorite things in life, all of them having to do with family. He was an avid outdoorsman and taught all of his children how to fish and ski, both on the water and in the snow. He took them camping to his favorite spots in the Sierras, including his beloved Long Lake, always cooking up his famous "Cowboy Bread" for everyone. He loved to go to his kids' and grandkids' Little League games, basketball tournaments, football games, soccer matches, and horse shows. After retiring, he began playing jazz trumpet again with several groups in Santa Cruz County and especially with Jazz A, which performed every Sunday at Aptos Coffee Roasting shop. They were also seen at Caf‚ Mare in downtown Santa Cruz, and along the route of the annual Wharf-to-Wharf race from Santa Cruz to Capitola. John was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and fought it valiantly until he died peacefully on August 31, only two weeks after his last musical performance in Aptos. He is survived by his wife Judy, and four step-children and their families: Daughter Lynne Domhoff of Prunedale; daughter Lori Hill, son-in-law Glenallen Hill, granddaughter Heleyna, and grandson G. J.; son Bill Domhoff and granddaughter Lorrynn Hamel-Domhoff, and son Joel Domhoff, all from Santa Cruz. He is also survived by his first wife, Janet Whitney of Bend, Oregon; son Curtis Stenovich of Austin, Texas; son Andrew Stenovich and daughter-in-law Meagan, grandson Sequoya and granddaughter Lilikoi Rose, from Kauai, Hawaii; daughter Jen Rusk, son-in-law Tim Rusk, grandsons Will and Neal Rusk, of Bend, Oregon; and daughter Julie Kealey, son-in-law Tom Kealey, grandsons Thomas and Nicholas Kealey, also from Bend, Oregon. In addition, John is survived by his sister, Janice Fortune, nieces Chris Fortune and Laurie Parker, Laurie's husband Loren, nephew Garrett Parker and niece Meghan Parker, all originally from Madera. His very close, long-time friends Pat Blanchette and Jerry Dannemiller will miss him dearly, as will the many friends with whom he played music. Since its inception more than twenty years ago, John was a supporter of Dientes Community Dental Care, a nonprofit clinic that provides low-cost dental services to the community's underserved. He was an advocate and a committed member of their Board of Directors for three years and a member of its Advisory Committee for many more. The family requests that those wishing to honor Dr. Stenovich may send donations in his memory to Dientes-Attn: Stenovich Fund, 1830 Commercial Way, Santa Cruz 95065. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 900 High Street, on Saturday, October 13th, at 2pm.

There is another angel looking after us now. John, you made all of our smiles brighter with your care, and were a great fishing companion with Chuck.

I will always remember your visit to Anchorage Alaska with Drew, Steve and Bill. What fun we had! I know you are out fishing for the "big king salmon" in your personal honey hole. You were my friend, my mentor and my sounding board. The world seems empty knowing that you have left us. You will be missed by so many. Theresa, Elise and Lola

I met John as a 10-year-old kid (fifty years ago) because I was either his first or one of his very first patients in Capitola. Over the years we kind of "grew up" together. As we said, it wasn't just dental, it was mental when I sat in the chair. John and I exchanged jokes, and stories through the years, and we talked about our lives, too. When he stopped being a dentist we didn't stop being friends. John Stenovich was a rare individual. Beyond special, unique, honest, caring, and all with humor. When I opened the paper to see his smiling face in the obituary section I gasped in shock because John was indominable - and still is. I can count on one hand the people I truely respect and love - he is one. And thanks to him, I have most of my teeth! This world is a sorrier place with his passing. To his family I send our deepest condolences. Your loss is great--you've had a great man in your midst. John I will miss you.

I was shocked to say the least at reading of John's passing. When you have known a person since teenage years, you don't expect to read that they have passed. I know that John is going to be missed terribly by his loved ones. My condolences to Judy and Jannie and the rest of John's family. I have a big hole in my heart, too. Love to you all, Evonne Sordi Gilman

Now Dr. John Stenovich's laughter has joined Jim McCaig's and Ray Speltz' in that great jazz band up there. Each worked so hard to keep me going off the deep end, saxophone-wise, with wise, yet kind, critique. I will miss you.

Dr.Stenovich made Oral Pathology an amazing experience and the stories are still vivid in my mind 25 years later. The pleasure of working with Dr. Stenovich at Western Career College for a brief time was a second gift and his baked goods were just as awesome as he was. Thank-you to his family for sharing such an inspirational mentor.

Since I can't be with all of you, to share our memories of Johnny, I just want to say knowing my brother was an experience we all have enjoyed and treasured. He was such a caring, special person who will missed so much. The one comforting thought is that he will no longer suffer. Enjoy this time together and know that I would have loved being there with all of you to share those memories. Jan Fortune devoted sister

I will miss you very much Uncle John. I have the most wonderful memories that will live on forever…like growing up and the family trips to Santa Cruz spending time with my cousins…our famous yearly skeet shooting of your favorite hat, that in time I was actually able to shoot (even if it was on the ground) and the San Francisco Fancy Food show which you were not suppose to take any food out, but with Uncle John's charm, talking to the security guard we were able to get out 2 bags which we took over to Jens so the boys would have lots of candy. I loved the advice you gave me on so many occasions. I could go on and on but anyone that knew him knows what I am talking about. My prayers and thoughts are with all of my cousins, their families, and Aunt Jan. Aunt Judy I said before and I will say it again...You are our special angel that has done so much for us. Thank you! Play that trumpet Uncle John I'm listening…Love Chrissy

Patsy and I feel a great personal loss in John's passing and our prayers and thoughts go out to his whole family. We think devoutly of his sister Jannie, in Oregon, as I we grew up together in Madera and were very close to the Stenovich family. I remember in the late 30's when our family, the Noble family and the Stenovich family all celebrated Thanksgiving together. When we got ready to sit down and and eat we noticed a nice big bite of the brest of the turkey had been attacked and eaten. John's dad, also named John, called his wife, nick named Sheep, and said we've got to sit down as it looks like the little guy is starved to death. Correct!! Johnny had climed up on the table and attacked that great looking turkey. We have known John since birth and what a great person. Once again, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and Jannie. Great guy and friend!!!

I am so sorry to hear this news. My sympathies to the entire family. I was lucky enough to have John as my dentist, as well as neighborhood friend and even employer, when I babysat for the kids. My mom says (and I agree) "I've never had a better, kinder dentist". He was a wonderful man and will be missed.
