Joseph Falco Obituary

Joseph Francis Falco Mar 19, 1924 - May 21, 2013 Resident of Aptos "He Made a Difference" Born in Worchester, Mass. to Italian immigrants from Calabria, Joe was the fourth of eight siblings. From an early age he exhibited exceptional physical strength and willpower. He was the first of his family to complete high school, then he made sure that his younger siblings -- Fred, Eleanor, Jeanie, and Tony-all had the same opportunity. While Joe was serving in World Was II his family relocated to Fresno, CA. After discharge he found employment in Fresno working the evening shift at the Juvenile Detention Center, which allowed him to study math at Fresno State by day. He met and married Barbara Jarvis during this time and they had three wonderful children-- David, Christina, and Michael. In 1968 Joe and Barbara who had both been teaching in Fresno were able to relocate the family to Santa Cruz County, with teaching jobs in Watsonville. In his career caring for the juvenile detainees and also later as a teacher Joe was noted for standing up to bullies, and also for protecting and encouraging the vulnerable. While teaching math he always strongly emphasized the importance of education and that math is not just for academics but a necessary task for all to address. Later he often ran into former students who thanked Mr. Falco for greatly improving their school focus and effort. He did make a difference! Many will miss his large arsenal of jokes and stories. A celebration of his life will be scheduled in the future to share stories and photos of Joe.

Aptos Jr. High '76-'77. One of my most memorable teachers. He really cared about his students. A very tough exterior but a true softy underneath. you will be missed.

There are no words. He believed in me when no one else did. He will always be a part of me.

My condolences to the family of Mr. Falco. As one of his students from the late '70's in a class I did not excel at, I found myself learning more than math from his examples of fairness, discipline, thoughtfulness and passion. It was, and still is, an honor to have known him, however briefly and at the distance of a student.

His life as a musician should also be recalled! Joe and wife, Bobbie, had us record their Balkan-esque performances at Wisteria, The Buttery, and various SC Symphony fund-raisers so that their youngest generation would understand that their grandparents had multiple interests & talents! (as did my Worcester family) . Loved Joe's smile! Jane & Bob, Mobile-DV.com

Mr Falco made a huge difference - he was also so well respected that us "Students" continue to call him "Mr Falco"
the things he taught me had nothing to do with math, yet have remained with me my whole life - Lisa Hodus Aptos Jr High Math 1973-1974

There are some teachers you always remember. I have never come across anyone who didn't grin at remembering Mr. Falco and his Jr. High Algebra class. He called all the student's by their last names and treated everyone equally. There was this tough facade, but occasionally it was cracked with a great big broad smile if something was genuinely funny(my sister Carrie got that smile once or twice). We need more teachers, and men, like Mr. Falco.

Great guy, great teacher. He was hard on me but I deserved it and he changed how I thought about math, learning and respect. He never forgot my face, even years later. I'll never forget Mr. Falco. Thanks for doing it right.
