William S. Hay

William S. Hay Resident of Soquel Will Hay, in charge, died of leukemia, Jan. 11, 2013 at age 89. Married twice: first for 60 years to his childhood sweetheart, Jacqueline, then for just over 6 months to Encee, prematurely a victim of breast cancer. He is survived by children Terry, Alys, Jeff and wife Karen, several grand and great-grandchildren, his extended family Joseph and Antonio Cervantes, and dear friends Mardi Brick and Laura Grenyo. Will enjoyed telling friends that in early 1944 he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp. "by special order of the Commander for his own convenience". Soon he was transferred to the Navy as commissioned Officer on a mine sweeper in the South Pacific. His ship was off-shore near Japan during the Hiroshima bombing. Will received both his BA and MBA from Stanford assisted by the GI Bill. His lifelong work included 10 years, DMV Division Chief supervising 32 offices in Southern California; 8 years, Sacramento County Dir. of Social Welfare, 1300 employees,$100,000,000 budget. Locally, Will served on the County Grand Jury, and at 84 ran for County Supervisor. In mid-life Will had moved to Kuaii and with son Jeff, designed and physically built a Tropical A-frame home on the banks of the Wainiha River. Then went to Oahu where he partnered in a startup natural foods grocery. At present the company is among the nine highest grossing local firms in Hawaii. During retirement he lived two years near Seattle, ten years in the mountain resort town of Ruidoso, NM, and twelve years in Santa Cruz where he was a frequent contributor to the Sentinel "As You See It" section. Will described himself as "a nice man". However, he was much more than that as demonstrated by his enormous contribution to the happiness of everyone who knew him. He did not wish to have a Memorial Service.
