Aileen Phyllis Cushing Baziuk, 87 years of age died on May 15, 2013, in the city of Aptos, California after a long battle with Alzheimers. Aileen was born on March 6, 1926 in San Jose, CA to James Benjamin & Doris (Burgess) Cushing. She had one sister, Barbara (Cushing) Wisler. Aileen married her high school sweetheart, Leo John Baziuk (predeceased), shortly before he enlisted in the United States Navy for WWII. Aileen & Leo lived in San Jose, CA, and then relocated in Aptos, CA shortly before Leo retired from the San Jose Fire Department. They raised six children together. After Leo's death, Aileen relocated to Soquel, CA, Scotts Valley, CA, and finally returned to Aptos, CA at Aegis Care facility. During her life, Aileen enjoyed learning to golf, knit and sew. She was an active Catholic parishioner at St. John Vianney's, and St. Frances Cabrini in San Jose, followed by Resurrection Parish in Aptos, St. Joseph's Church in Capitola, and San Agustin's Parish in Scotts Valley, CA. Together with Leo, Aileen served as a Marriage Encounter presenter, Lecturn, and enjoyed giving Communion to the elderly and infirmed of the parish. Aileen volunteered her time as a candystriper at Dominican Hospital, and worked in the office at Cabrillo College. After raising six children, she attended classes at Cabrillo College in the mature women's program.
Aileen is survived by 5 of her 6 children: William Leo Baziuk and his wife Catherine in Auburn, CA, Michael Rodney Baziuk from Santa Cruz, CA, Marilyn Doris (Baziuk) Weaver and her husband Charles in Sedona, AZ, Beverly Anne (Baziuk) Jensen and her husband Paul in Santa Cruz, CA, Nancy Lynn (Baziuk) Haver and her husband William in Scotts Valley, CA. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Walter Matijkowiciz, loving and faithful husband of her daughter Linda. Aileen is survived by her fourteen grandchildren: Michael Matijkowicz and his wife Kari in Roseburg, OR, John Matijkowicz of Roseburg, OR, Kevin Young of CA, Clayton Matijkowicz of CA, Christine (Baziuk)Sayers & her husband John of Aptos, CA, Philip Baziuk and his wife, Leah, of Cave Creek, AZ, Jennifer (Baziuk) Marchan and her husband Michael of Morgan Hill, CA, Jeffrey Baziuk, of Elizabeth, CO, Lisa (Weaver) Olsen and her husband A.J. of Portland, OR, Frank Palacios III and his wife Yvette of Gilroy, CA, Maxwell Weaver of Vance AFB in Enid, OK, Melody (Merrell) Barker and her husband Carl of Santa Cruz, CA, Kelly (Merrell) Parham and her husband, Kyle of Scotts Valley, CA, and Kimberly Jensen of San Francisco, CA.
Aileen was survived by four nieces: Sandra Baziuk, Jean (Baziuk) Anderson of OR, Diane (Baziuk) Nystrom, and Susan Wisler and her husband Jim of Paradise, CA, and by three nephews: Gary Baziuk and his wife Caroline of Fairfield, CA, Mitch Baziuk, and his wife Mary, and Richard Morrison and his wife Opal all of CA. Aileen had one brother-in-law: Bill Baziuk who resides in San Jose, CA.
Aileen was predeceased by her loving husband, Leo John Baziuk on December 12, 1993, in Santa Cruz, CA, from Scleroderma. Her father, James Benjamin Cushing died in San Bruno, CA from tuberculosis. Her mother, Doris Burgess Whaley, died from Emphysema in Santa Cruz, CA. Her daughter Linda Carole (Baziuk) Matijkowicz, the only child who predeceased her, died after a five year battle with breast cancer. Her newborn grandson Daniel Palacios died in 1973 from hyaline membrane disease. Her niece, Donna Morrison died from injuries sustained in a horse accident, and Donna's father, James Morrison, Aileen's brother-in-law, died in a plane accident. Aileen's brother-in-law, Ellsworth Wisler also preceded her in death. Aileen's step-father, Rodney Whaley died after a long-term debilitation from numerous strokes. Her favorite sister-in-law Norma Baziuk died in 2011, after a lengthy illness. Tasha V was Aileen's favorite and faithful dog companion, who died in her last home in Scotts Valley, CA.
A memorial service will be held on May 30, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. At Resurrection Church, 7600 Soquel Dr., Aptos, Ca 95003. Reception to follow the Celebration of life mass, in the hall at Resurrection Church.
Aileen is to be cremated by her request, and her ashes will be interred in the family niche at the Soquel Cemetery, Old San Jose Rd, Soquel, CA.
