Donald Salter Obituary
Donald Salter
Resident of Santa Cruz
Was born March 31st, 1986, and passed away unexpectedly on June 1st, 2012, at his home in Santa Cruz. He was 26 years old.
Donald was a great visionary and intellectual, well educated and well read, and had traveled the world, crossing the Equator more than a dozen times. He was a fine young man and always accomplished what he set out to do. Donald's accomplishments were many and commendable, though he was modest and had much respect for all humanity.
Donald attended Holy Cross School, Mission Hill Junior High, Pacific Collegiate and Santa Cruz High School. He graduated from the California Maritime Academy (CMA), in May of 2009, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation. Graduating as a Third Mate Deck Officer, he had worked his way up to the distinction of Second Mate.
Between 2010 and 2012 he was employed by Liberty Maritime Corporation. This took him to ports all over the world. In particular, Donald worked on grain transport vessels, conducting humanitarian aid missions to impoverished nations in Africa.
Not only a Merchant Mariner, Donald was an accomplished surfer, sailor, and all around waterman. He learned how to surf at age six and was an avid participant in the junior lifeguard program when he was six years old. Donald loved to surf, but more importantly, he loved the friendship and comraderie that came with the sport.
Donald spent much time in his young years fishing with his late father, Gary Salter, on the Monterey Bay. He stood by his mother, Molly, through two bouts of cancer, showering her with his love and kindness, helping her to become a two time survivor. This selfless devotion was consistent with his character and behavior to all. Donald had great plans for the future. His future plans encompassed; graduate school, the business side of shipping and management, a surfing expedition to Indonesia, and starting a family of his own.
Upon his father, Gary Salter's passing in 2009, Donald had assumed the helm of the Salter Family. He is survived by his Mother, Molly, his sisters: Bonnie (Chris Krietz) and Elizabeth; nieces: Kelly and Pfeiffer, nephews: Aidan, Carson, and Kyland, and his Aunt Elizabeth Javaheri and Uncles Bob Salter and Patrick O'Keefe. He will be forever loved by his family, friends, his alumni from CMA, his fellow Mariners and the surfing community. Words are insufficient to describe the loss we feel for our happy, loving visionary, our Donald.
A Mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church on Thursday June 14th at 11 am in Santa Cruz. Visitation the day before at Ave Maria Chapel in Watsonville from 4 -7 pm. 609 Main Street, Watsonville, tel. 831 724 4751.
