Joanne Elizabeth Lovett Lathrop Obituary
Joanne Elizabeth Lovett Lathrop
Aug. 5, 1925 ~ Oct. 12, 2013
Resident of Watsonville
Joanne Lathrop passed away Saturday, October 12, 2013. She was 88.
A native of Berkeley, California, Joanne lived in Watsonville 58 years. Her early life was in Weaverville, then Lone Pine and Soquel. She graduated from Santa Cruz High in 1943 and married her "Sailor Boy" Vernon Lathrop in 1946. She worked for many years as a kindergarten aide and was the secretary/bookkeeper for Lathrop Distributing.
Joanne participated in many activities, including Make a Wish Volunteer, P.E.O., City Beautification Committee, Altar Guild Episcopal Church (Bell Ringing), Welcome Wagon "Eating Club," and Santa Cruz High School Alumni.
She traveled with friends and family to: all four corners of the U.S. and Hawaii and Alaska; Japan; Hong Kong; Europe; the Baltic Sea; and China.
Joanne had a playful and creative approach to everyday living. This was evident in her home, which was filled with miniature figurines, flower arrangements, silly cake decorations, and her journalistic photo albums of family events and travel.
Joanne was a survivor of breast cancer for over 40 years. She faced this challenge and others in her life with a strength, dignity and grace that was an inspiration to all who knew her. Joanne was universally described as such a gracious woman.
Family and friends were Joanne's passion and joy. She is lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her four children: Cheryl Lathrop (Bern Beecham) of Palo Alto; Pam (Rick) Snider of Charleston, SC; Nina Alamillo of Watsonville; and Richard ( Kathy) Lathrop of Watsonville. She is also survived by six grandchildren (Nicole, Lyndi, Abe, David, Emily and Josh) and six great-grandchildren (Kaitlyn, Connor, Kaleb, Evan, Emma and Nicholas). As well, Joanne will be missed by her long-time friend and supporter Pat Probert. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Lathrop in 1984 and her sister, Mary Louise Whitehead in 2012.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 2 at Soquel Congregational Church at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Make a Wish or The .
