Karen Ann Booth Salazar, 54, lost her courageous battle with breast cancer, passing away peacefully at her home in Aptos on August 11, 2011.
She was born on July 20, 1957 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. A few years later, the family relocated to Southern California, later moving to Citrus Heights, then to the Santa Clara Valley where they eventually settled in Los Gatos.
Karen graduated from Los Gatos High School in 1975. She continued her education at San Diego State University, graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979, and receiving her California State teaching credential in 1980. She began her first teaching job in 1981 at Miano Elementary School in Los Banos, California. She loved working with children and teaching in her fun, yet effective style.
Karen married John Salazar in 1983 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Los Gatos. John and Karen were able to include all of their siblings, and some nephews and nieces in their wedding party. This was admirable in that the wedding party totaled 20. Following their wedding, Karen and John moved to Capitola. Karen taught at Quail Hollow Elementary School in Felton from 1984 until 1991. Karen and John's first child, Marina, was born in March of 1988, and in March of 1991, they were blessed with the birth of twin sons, Andrew and Nathan,. While the children were in school, Karen worked part-time as a tutor, a reading specialist, a substitute teacher, and then as a part-time sixth grade teacher at Rio Del Mar Elementary School, where she taught until June 2011 After her children were born, Karen worked part-time so that she could focus on her first priority, her family. She especially loved spending time with her husband and children, with her parents, extended family and her friends; her family and friends were so dear to her and always at the center of her life.
Karen had a fantastic energy and love for life. She was an avid gardener, filling her garden with plants, flowers, and trees. Her favorite flowers were sweet peas. She enjoyed dancing and took jazz, tap, ballet, Latin, and yoga classes at Dancenter in Capitola for over a decade. Karen was an avid movie-goer, and loved listening to music, as well as reading. She was very artistic. She enjoyed watercolor painting and picassiette ceramics, and was accomplished at knitting and crocheting. She also was a member of her Bunco group, "The Bunco Babes," for 18 years.
Karen was always willing to volunteer in her community. She was a member of the Nursing Mother's Council for five years; she taught Sunday school at Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Aptos for ten years, and volunteered in all of her children's classrooms.
Karen is survived by her loving family: her husband John; her daughter Marina 23; her twin sons Andrew and Nathan, 20; her parents Herbert and Patricia Booth; her two sisters Kathy Dauz and husband Jolly, and Kristine Ludwinski and husband Rick; her brother Paul Booth and wife Stacy, 12 brothers and sisters-in-law from the Salazar side of the family, and 16 nephews and nieces.
A celebration of life is planned for this Sunday August 21st at 2:00 PM at the First Congregational Church located at 900 High Street in Santa Cruz. Reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall on site. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer a donation to WomenCare of Santa Cruz.

Karen Salazar was the kindest, funniest and smartest parent/educator that I knew at Rio Delmar elementary. I had an after school art program that all three of her children attended.. she was an inspiring woman, and I´m so sad that she was taken by cancer so early in her life. I remember you, Karen I drive by your home. I think if your children and your husband and you. I can´t imagine what they´re doing now, but they were fabulous little kids.! Take care dear Karen

Karen was a joy and a love to see coming to get her children every day from Rio del Mar school. I taught Marina, Nathan and Andrew in an after school art program and was their teacher aid in the second grades. Karen was loved by everyone! She is someone to remember, and I am so happy that today, this memory came up. Karen you are on my Dia de los Muertos Altar. You will never be forgotten for your kind, loving and fun personality!

Karen was an amazing person who left a beautiful fingerprint on the world. I've been blessed to have known her. She gave us all a wonderful example of how to live life to the fullest, how to have fun and be fun, how to be kind, and how to make a postive impact in whatever we do.

Oh what to say........
Karen was an amazing woman! Bright, sensitive, funny and a great friend. We met in the mid-eighties teaching at the same school. Because we both lived in Santa Cruz, we began to carpool most days to Quail Hollow in Ben Lomond. That's 20 mins. up and 20 mins. back giving us lots if time to talk, something we both enjoyed doing. We found we share the same opinions about politics, social issues and concerns, even religion, attending the same church. Our children knew each other and our families got together. My children babysat her children as well
We enjoyed children, teaching, knitting, gardening, reading the same books, music (she danced) and I played. We discussed everything with great enthusiasm, interrupting each other at times, finishing each other's thoughts and sentences. And sarcasm, why we were never ever sarcastic!
Five years ago when I retired and Karen began to teach part time we suddenly realized that we might be able to get together on a regular basis. We began to plan around Thursdays. We found we could do a Costco run, or try lunch at a new restaurant or see a chosen film. We made sure that if we were out of town, had an appt. we could not get out of, that we made up for it the next week
So needless to say Karen will be missed. In fact I already saw something in the paper I know she needs to see...........

Words cannot express how saddened I am by the loss to our family. My Aunt Karen was such an important part of every family gathering and they will never be the same. I still can't quite believe this happened and don't think I will ever fully understand it. Aunt Karen, I love you and am so thankful that I was able to see you so often this summer. Your smile, wit, charm, and sense of humor will be missed. I thank you for every time you listened to me and gave me advise. I am a better person for having had you in my life.

I will always remember Karen's beautiful smile as she juggled both boys on her hips when I first met her Marina, and the boys at Rio del Mar School. Marina was in my art class and Karen was trying to hold an intelligent conversation while seriously juggling the adorable darling boys! She kept laughing, smiling, and took everything in stride! She was so POSITIVE! and kids and adults loved her! I loved her energy, it was contagious! I learned of Karen's passing on 8/26, from people who attended the tree planting ceremony at the school. John, Marina, Andrew, and Nathan, please know how much of a bright light your wife/mom was for me when we were all raising our kids at Rio. We had some of the funniest conversations about child rearing and I learned so many strategies to teach reading to the little ones I worked with at school. Blessings to all so that you may find comfort among yourselves and through your family, friends, and faith. I will always remember Karen with a bright smile and a giggle. I can hear her now...Karen, I have saved a place for you on my Dia de los Muetros altar. I'll post a picture during that time. God Bless!

As an introverted kid, my aunt Karen made me feel at ease during family gatherings with her witty sense of humor and innate ability to light up a room with her presence. My mom -- and Karen's older sister -- Kathy, tells me she wasn't always so extroverted as a kid. Thus, as an adult I hope to carry on her legacy by molding myself into the charming teacher, leader, and spirit that she came to be -- and what I will always remember her as.
Karen, thank you for blessing me with your wonderful presence. Although you are no longer physically here, your eternal light will continue to shine over all who've had the pleasure of knowing you.

I will always treasure the times Karen and I had together when our girls and boys were little. We watched each others kids so we could volunteer in the classroom, and bonded over our mutual love of dance. Karen was always easy to talk to, fun to be with, and quick to comfort when I was worried about things. As the kids grew, she and John always made time for my daughter, Katerina, when she sought their opinion and career advice. We will never forget your happy face and kind heart, Karen. May the Lord grant you peace, love, and joy. You and your family are an inspiration to us all. With love, Eva and the Robinson family.

Karen and I taught together in Los Banos at the beginning of our teaching careers. I remember her vitality, joy and energy. We were young, single and living in a small valley town that rolled up the carpet at 9:00 at night. Somehow Karen, Nancy Gailey Joyce and I found fun things to do. My heart goes out to all her family. She is one of God's bright lights.

Karen was one of those people whose effervescent spirit just bubbled out of her!
She made everyone around her feel welcome and at ease.
She was wacky yet thoughtful, caring yet slightly irreverent.
I played bunco with her for 18 years, and though I only saw her once a month, (if that) we kept up with each others lives and families.
She never judged - she was always positive and supportive...and fun! Mostly fun, thats how I think of her. With a laugh on her lips and a twinkle in her eye.
My heart goes out to you John, Marina, Nathan, Andrew and her entire Family.
Your loss is enormous and unimaginable. I hope and pray that in time the feeling of pain will ease, and you will only feel her love.
She was a special person.
She touched so many.
The world is a better place simply because she was here.

John, at our recent dance lesson at the Palomar Ballroom, the first without you and Karen being there with us, we dedicated our initial dance in memory of Karen. It was the Swing. We danced flawlessly. Jeremy said it was the best swing we ever did. Karen was truly smiling at us. The second dance we did in honor of you. We constantly were tripping over our feet & had to stop to get back into the dance. Karen kept right on smiling at us. We will ALWAYS have you with us at these sessions. We will soon bring you over for dinner. Lots of love, Jeff & Merle

Karen was a wonderful mother, colleague, and friend. Her light may have flickered for a moment, but it has not gone out. She is one of those special people who will not be quickly forgotten; she left so much beauty behind. We love you, Karen.

I taught with Karen at Rio del Mar from 2004-2007. She always knew exactly what to say to make anyone feel at home. She challenged her students and kept us all on our toes with her quick wit. She lit up a room with her laughter and her smile. My life is better for having known her. Rest in peace and dance with the angels Karen. I know your spirit lives on with us all~

Dear John, Marina, Andrew & Nathan,
I fondy remember Karen. I am a good friend of Nancy Joyce nee Gailey. Karen had a zest for life, wicked sense of humor, witty moments are what I
will always treasure. I remember John your wedding day to Karen.
Her million and one giggles & smiles, the chicken mishap (Chix divan
I believe eventually became KFC due to the heat) & the coffee mugs
which I got a kick out of. John, yours said "Damn I'm good", Karen's
said "Hell I'm Better". I was laughing soo loud my sides hurt.
Marina, I remember why your Mom named your name. I remember she
spoke well of your Aunt Marina. Boys I did'nt get a chance to know
you that well. But I do remember when the two of you were newborns
and Dan & Nancy Joyce brought your family to the Bear Valley CA
cabin, Nancy told me afterward your mom was soothing the two
of you at different times when both of you cried. In addition to breast
feeding you both from one breast to the other.
Karen was also spontaneous. One Christmas she broke out her
guitar & everyone spoke on what a memorable Christmas it was.
Karen Booth Salazar was a remarkable & memorable lady who
I will never forget. She is now a guardian angel to all she touched here
on earth. I know she will never be replaced or cloned. Karen is
truely one in a million or rather there will be no other Karen Ann Booth
Salazar. She was beautiful both inside & out. Keep you heads up &
keep her memory alive. She will no further away than glancing
over your shoulder.
My Love and Prayers be with you Always,

She was my 6th grade teacher and she taught me how to knit, and took us on field trips. She was one of my favorite teachers because she would try to explain in great detail a math problem you wouldn't understand. She was high spirited and was very kind and nice to others. My fellow students and I will miss her bunches.

Karen was one of the most positive and upbeat people I have ever known. I had the pleasure of teaching next door to her many years ago at Quail Hollow. Karen always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye, she was a wonderful teacher. In the years since at Christmas, she kept me up to date with her beautiful family who were at the core of all she did. My thoughts and prayers are with her beautiful family at this very sad and difficult time.

My friend and dance partner, Karen! How much fun and laughter we had, tapping across the floor, prancing across the stage and doing a helluva job at entertaining the masses. I can hear you chuckling at that comment now. You are surrounded by love and peace in God's hands. Know you will be missed.
