Muriel R. Holmquist Obituary
Muriel R. Holmquist
June 21, 1920 - July 17, 2013
Resident of Santa Cruz

We sadly said goodbye to our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Muriel Holmquist on July 17, 2013. She was a wonderful and caring woman who enriched our lives in so many ways. Muriel was born on June 21, 1920, to Martin and Emma Gerbitz in Fresno, California. She grew up with her older sister, Lillian, on a small grape ranch in Rolinda, just outside of Fresno. She graduated from Fresno State College with a degree in music. After World War II, she married Clyde Holmquist, who was born and raised in Nebraska. Together, they operated small grocery stores in the Fresno area until the early 1960's when they relocated to Santa Cruz and co-founded Deluxe Foods Market in East Cliff Village, and later Deluxe Foods in Aptos. She was a devoted wife and mother, with her life revolving around raising their four children, spending many years attending school and sports activities. Muriel will forever be remembered in her church community as a faithful servant and cherished friend. She was dedicated to serving the Lord through all her activities at Messiah Lutheran Church for over fifty years. Her support of the church included performing as a soprano in the choir, directing the children's choir, visiting and singing at local care facilities, and participating in the Women's Missionary League. She baked countless cookies, cupcakes, and spent many hours making quilts to sell at the church bazaars.
Muriel was an avid gardener and enjoyed years of tending to her garden, a real thing of beauty! She also enjoyed traveling extensively to Hawaii, Europe, and China; always bringing back trinkets and dolls to share with her grandchildren. She relished spending time with family and friends, and was always there to help anyone in need.
She will forever be in the hearts of her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Jon Ditlevsen of Soquel, sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Judy Holmquist of Truckee, James and Joan Holmquist of Watsonville, and Rodney and Andrea Holmquist of Albany, Oregon. She will also be fondly remembered and cherished by her nine grandchildren, Kristen and Marissa Ditlevsen, Stephen Holmquist, Leslie Hall, Brooke and Brittney Holmquist, Emma, Ben and Anna Holmquist, and four great grandchildren, Sam and Natalie Hall, and Jack and Audrey Holmquist.
A memorial service honoring her life with memories and music will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church (801 High Street, Santa Cruz, CA. 95060) on August 10, 2013, beginning at 11 a.m. Contributions may be made in her memory to Messiah Lutheran Church, attention Pastor Richard Rice.
