Norma Isabel Houlahan Wolff of Santa Cruz, California, passed away peacefully at home on April 2, 2018, at the age of 93, with her family at her bedside.
Her parents were the late María Elena Belisare of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Peter Joseph Houlahan of Philadelphia.
Norma was born in Buenos Aires, while her father served there at the American consulate. Her sister, María Houlahan, and brother, James Houlahan, preceded her in death. She worked as a photojournalist for the Buenos Aires Herald, a medical photographer, a portrait artist and a bilingual corporate secretary for many years in Buenos Aires and in the United States. She was also a reknowned gnocchi-maker.
She spent time in Haiti, worked as a missionary in Brazil and arrived in California in 1975. Several years later she graduated with a bachelor's degree in religious studies from U.C. Santa Cruz at the age of 56.
She is survived by six of her seven children: Juanita Wolff, Tomás Wolff, Patricio Korzeniewicz, Alejandro Korzeniewicz, Cristián Korzeniewicz and Gabriel Wolff. Her son Miguel Korzeniewicz passed in 2002. In addition, she leaves nine grandchidren: María E., Jason, Adrián, Gabriel, Elena, Maciel, María S., Miguel and Mateo; three great-grandchildren: Tomás, Max and Bella; one niece: Lorri; and many other family members and friends.
Norma was a third-order Franciscan who attended Holy Cross Catholic Church and volunteered to serve the poor in Santa Cruz and several other parts of the world. Her legacy will guide all who knew her for many years to come.
A memorial for Norma will be held in August. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to Holy Cross Church – Saint Francis Kitchen.
