Richard "Ted" Hensley
June 25, 1943 - January 28, 2014
Resident of Long Beach, WA
It is with heavy hearts that we celebrate the life of Richard Theodore Hensley who passed from this life on January the 28th, 2014.
Ted was a lifelong caregiver and
of others. He was a
for more than 30 years, teaching lifesaving skills as Training Officer at UC Santa Cruz Fire Department, and rising to serve as Chief of that department. He was also very active in coordinating and instructing many Cabrillo College/ROP Fire Academies. Driven to inspire, lead, and educate, when he retired, Ted went back to school and followed his calling to serve as a schoolteacher in Hayward and Watsonville.
He never fully retired - most recently he was teaching at the Boys & Girls Club in Long Beach, WA while designing and building his dream home for himself, his loving wife, Patty, their dog Gus, and cat Maggie.
Beyond the love he had for his family members, fellow firefighters, and countless children he inspired, Ted loved nature and all of its wonders; especially those surrounding Monterey Bay and the Santa Cruz Mountains. He loved fishing and wildlife, gardening and planting, backpacking and skiing, surfing and mountaineering, BBQing and cooking.
Ted's Father served our country onboard a B-17 during
World War II
and was lost during his service before Ted was born. As an adult, Ted's most wonderful discovery was finding his father through the stories of others. Even without a Father, Ted became a father figure to so many, including children of his own.
Ted is survived by his wife Patty, his son Justin, his daughter Elizabeth, grandchildren, Phillip, Benit and Charlotte, siblings, DeEtta, Janice, Jerilyn, Cynthia, Pamela, Kathy, and Jimmy.
Please join Ted's family and loved ones in a Ceremony of Celebration in honor of Ted on Saturday, February 15, 1:00pm at Kennolyn Camps, 8400 Glen Haven Rd Soquel, CA. In lieu of flowers, we would suggest a donation to Ted's passions, Cabrillo College/ROP Fire Academies and/or the Boy's and Girl's Club of Long Beach Peninsula.
