Ruth Misako Tsuji Sakamoto was born on July 22, 1916 in Seattle, WA. The second child of Saizo and Misu Tsuji, Ruth had four siblings, Grace, Frank, Ted, and Art.
The family moved to Los Angeles in 1930. She lived with her family in Los Angeles until they were sent to the Poston War Relocation Center in Arizona in 1942, as a result of Executive Order 9066 which removed Americans of Japanese heritage from the West Coast.
While interned in Poston, Ruth met George Sakamoto and the two married in November, 1943. After leaving Poston in 1945, the Sakamotos moved to Los Angeles. In 1958, the family moved to Santa Cruz where Ruth was active with the Soquel Congregational Church and worked for the UC Santa Cruz library until her retirement in 1986. Her husband George passed away in 1994. Throughout her life, Ruth enjoyed crocheting, cooking, gardening, and playing the organ. Ruth took great pride in her two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Carolyn McCombs, son Gary Sakamoto, son-in-law Richard McCombs, granddaughters Laurel McCombs and Kara Gallagher, Matt Gallagher and great-grandchildren Kenzie, Ayva, and Cooper.
A memorial service will be held at the Soquel Congregational Church on Sunday, June 4th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Soquel Congregational Church, the Monterey Peninsula Japanese-American Citizens League, or the .
