With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Dr. Roy Eugene Christian. After a lengthy illness his spirit was lifted with Jeanette, his loving wife of 54 years, by his side. He was 82.
A California native he was raised in Los Banos and Sacramento by his parents Eugene and Olive Christian. He served his country during the Korean war reaching the rank of Staff Sargent in the United States Air force. Dr. Christian was a graduate of UC Berkeley and received his medical degree from UCSF, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. Christian's medical career began at Centiuela hospital in Inglewood. In 1967 he relocated to Aptos taking a position as a student health physician at UCSC and then moved on to a 20 + year career at Dominican Hospital as an emergency room physician.
Dr. Christian spent his early years as a ranger at Yosemite, Grand Tetons and Grand Canyon National Parks, forming a bond with nature that would lead to a lifetime of travel and exploration. His interests in photography, wildlife, steam locomotives, spectacular scenery and cultures inspired his journeys to every continent in the world, including Iceland and Antarctica. As a result, Dr. Christian has an amazing collection of photographs and authored two books on South American steam engines. He was also a member of the International Association of Panoramic Photographers.
Dr. Roy Eugene Christian is survived by his wife Jeanette Christian, daughter Krista Christian and her partner, Margarita Martinez, of Rio Linda, son David Christian and his wife, Samantha, of Kihei Hawaii, grandson Kyler Christian of Aptos and granddaughter Chloe Meza of Santa Cruz.
Services will be August 30th, 2:00 p.m. at Oakwood Memorial Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Rd., Santa Cruz.
