Florence Braunstein Spodick Obituary
Florence Braunstein Spodick
Nov. 29, 1920 - July 17, 2014
Resident of Santa Cruz
Florence's greatest passion in life was her family. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she and her husband Saul moved to Santa Cruz in 1949 with their young daughter, Iralee and her mother-in-law, Rose Spodick. Saul and Florence opened General Furniture, a retail furniture store, in 1949 at 1001 Pacific Ave. Soon their two sons, Jerry and David, were born.
Florence believed in being involved in her community. She was involved with the Westlake PTA while her children were in school. Florence and Saul were founding members of Temple Beth El. She was also a founding member and served as president and an active board member of Temple Beth El Sisterhood. She managed the gift shop and was a temple educator. She was president of the B'nai B'rith in the mid 50s. B'nai B'rith is an organization to aid Jewish families in need and to provide assistance during disasters.
After her children left home she finished her college degree at Cabrillo College earning an AA degree. Florence was a great lover of art and music, especially opera, and continued her appreciation by taking classes at Cabrillo College. She was an avid bridge player and was addicted to crossword puzzles.
Florence Spodick passed away peacefully with her family surrounding her in the family home at the age of 93. Her beloved husband Saul preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Lee Colgan, her son, Jerald Spodick (Terry), her son David Spodick (Joy), her grandchildren, Rebecca & Hannah Spodick, her sister, Toby Kuttner, her nieces Barbara Feldman (George), and, Becci Harrison (Roy), and her nephew, Eric Kuttner (Matt).
The Spodick family is indebted to the caregivers of Myrna's Home Health Care, especially Pinky, Maria, Tess, Marilyn, Edelle and Myrna as well as the many caregivers from Florence Kou's Home Health Care. This dedicated group made Florence's last years comfortable and afforded her the opportunity to live in her home.
A memorial service will be held on Monday July 21, 2014 at 11 o'clock at Temple Beth El, 3055 Porter Gulch Road in Aptos.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Florence can be made to Temple Beth El, Cabrillo College, or Hospice of Santa Cruz.
