John King Obituary
John Jerome King
May 13, 1927 - October 21, 2012
Resident of La Selva Beach
DR. JOHN JEROME ("Jerry") KING died Sunday night in his sleep after a brief illness at his home in La Selva Beach. He was 85 years old.
Born on May 13, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, Jerry King was the youngest of five children. He dropped out of high school at the age of 17 to enlist in the Army and served during World War II. After the war he completed his term of service in Germany where he attended the Nuremberg war trials. Following his discharge, Dr. King went on to attend and graduate from Holy Cross College on the G.I. Bill. In 1955, he graduated from St. Louis University Medical School. He interned at Duke University and later moved to San Francisco, California and was Chief Resident at Stanford University Hospital.
In 1960, Dr. King began his 47-year career in Santa Cruz as a general surgeon. A gifted, hard-working and compassionate physician, Dr. King built an extremely successful practice and was well-respected among his medical colleagues and patients. For almost a half-century, he helped to establish a community of talented, smart and dedicated caregivers, many of whom continue to serve. From 1978 - 1982 he served as Chief of Staff at Dominican Hospital and was appointed to the California State Board of Medical Examiners by Governor Deukmejian.
A loving husband, father and incomparable friend, he was also an incorrigible teller of jokes. His boundless love of life, family, colleagues and friends coupled with his unyielding generosity invariably lifted the spirits of those around him. He was also an avid gardener. No visitor to his home left without being given both an extensive tour of his garden and a bagful of fruit and vegetables to take home.
He developed Los Barrancos de Aptos and Trestle Beach as well as several medical office buildings in Santa Cruz, including 1575 and 1595 Soquel Drive. In 1985, Dr. King donated a 1/4 mile of beachfront property to the State of California park system.
His final six weeks were a continuous celebration of friends and relatives who visited from near and far. His family thanks everyone, including well-wishers who could not be there, all of whom helped to make that time as full of joy as his previous 85 years.
Dr. King is survived by his brother, Fred King of Chicago; his wife of fifty-nine years, Julia Darst King; his three daughters, Jane, Katharine and Julia; his four sons, John, Stephen, Patrick and Timothy; daughters-in-law, Deanna Seagraves, Ann King, Kelly King and Janey King; sons-in-law, Rich Carbajal and Tony Steinberg; and nine grandchildren, John King Jr., Richard King, Alison King, Nicholas King, Sean King, Stephen Darst King, Caroline King, Emily King and Paul Steinberg.
A memorial service will be held at the Dominican Hospital Chapel on Saturday, November 3rd at 11:00 am.
