George J. Ponza, 90, passed away in Santa Cruz on Tuesday. A native of Santa Cruz, he graduated from Santa Cruz High in 1940 and later served as a Staff Sargent in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as the dispatcher for Granite Construction for 40 years. He was a member of the Santa Cruz Elks Club, the Marconi Club and the Delaveaga Golf Club and enjoyed playing golf, fishing, hunting, hiking and playing the accordion.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Ann Ponza, his two children, Georgianna (Oleg) Osipova and Michael (Kathleen) Ponza and his four grandchildren, Alesandra, Michael, Michael, and Meghan.
