On the evening of July 19, 2013, surrounded by loving family, LeBaron 'Barry' Houghton Esty Jr. lost his courageous battle with cancer.
Barry was born in Santa Cruz, Ca. on Nov. 23, 1952. He was the first child and first son of Arlene and LeBaron Houghton Esty Sr.
Barry grew up in Santa Cruz and even though he traveled the world, always retained lifelong ties to friends and family there. He graduated from Soquel High in 1970 and attended Cabrillo College before enlisting in the US Navy in 1971. He served honorably during the Vietnam War until 1973. In 1981 Barry met and married the love of his life, Debby Loers. They started a family and moved to Westport, Wa. In 1983.
Barry had a contagous sense of humor and was a self proclaimed Jeopardy Wizard, Fishing Master and Golfer Extraordinaire. He had an incredible knowledge of history and government, was a creative practical joker and wrote beautiful poetry. Barry was funny and caring and truly one of a kind.
Barry loved the ocean and from the time he stepped on to his first rented surfboard he was hooked on surfing. He made boards, gave lessons and mentored many young surfers including his brother Mark. Surfing became Barry's lifelong passion that never ended in his 60 years on earth. He was active in his community until the last few weeks of his life, living-as he had for many years in his home by the sea. Barry's strength and compassion will never be forgotten.
Barry is survived by; his children Virginia Esty and LeBaron and Aliza Esty; grandson Tearrien Wolinski; siblings Kim Esty and Colleen and Craig Knudsen; father LeBaron Houghton Esty Sr.; many cousins and good friends including Al and Kathy Perlee. Barry was preceded in death by his mother Arlene Esty and brother Mark Esty.
