Edward Thomas Burda June 27, 1923 - Aug. 15, 2013 Resident of Stockton, CA Edward T. Burda was born on June 27, 1923 in Chicago, IL and passed away in Stockton, CA on August 15, 2013, the son of Pawel and Katarzyna Burda. He served in the 10th Mountain Infantry Division in Italy during World War II. He received his BA from the University of Northern Colorado and his Master's from Stanford University. He was a school
and high school coach in Colorado and San Mateo, CA and an instructor and golf coach at Cabrillo Junior College in Aptos, CA. He is survived by his wife Bettie; two sons Jeff and Bruce and daughter Linda; eight grandchildren John, Ellie, Patrick, Kelly, Ryan, Mathew, Megan and Kevin; four great grandchildren Alexis, Vincent, Lorenzo and Francesca. (The above paragraph was written by Dad several years ago) Dad was born on the south side of Chicago, the youngest of five children born to Polish immigrants. His father and three of his brothers worked their entire lives in the steel mills. He sought encouragement and guidance from instructors at the Boys Club during high school and thought then he would like to be a coach. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School where he excelled in football and track. In the fall of 1942 he enrolled at St. Mary's College in Winona, MN., deciding he wanted to get away from the city and attend a small college. After one semester he joined the

. After World War II, he completed college at the University of Northern Colorado with a major in business and minor in physical education. He set a record in the 220 yard dash that stood for 25 years. There he met Bettie Raye Jackson his senior year and they married in 1950. They headed west where dad attended Stanford University, receiving a Masters Degree in counseling while mom taught school. He then became a highly successful basketball coach and instructor at San Mateo High School. He joined the business department of Cabrillo College in 1960 and retired from there June 8, 1983. Ever the coach, during this time he guided numerous youth, high school and college teams. He particularly enjoyed coaching golf. In retirement, he and mom became extremely active in Catholic Church activities at various parishes in the Lake Wildwood, Sonora and Stockton communities in which they lived. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2013 at O'Connor Woods in Stockton, Ca.
