Marion S. Mayes, passed away on September 1, 2013 at her home in Capitola with her family by her side. She was 103.
Marion was born in Gurnee, Illinois the daughter of Fred and Elsie Phelps. She grew up in North Dakota where she graduated from high school and college. As a young woman she taught school in North Dakota. She was a Plane Spotter-Home Front Volunteer in Florida during World War Two. After moving to Colorado she worked as an assistant to the kindergarten teacher at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. She also worked as a hospital volunteer for many years while in Colorado. Marion moved to Santa Cruz County in 1975
Marion was a very devoted wife and mother who deeply loved her family. She enjoyed spending time with people and loved traveling with her husband the late, W.J. Mayes. She was also an avid reader.
She is survived by her son, Gary Mayes, daughter, Karen (Mayes) Begley; grandchildren, Lisa Gosnell-Binkley, Glenna Cain, Kim Seward, Jack Gosnell, Tim Kingdom, Molly Anderson and Melissa Goss. She is also survived by twelve great grandchildren, one great great grandchild,six nieces and two nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John Mayes in 1989, her father, Fred Phelps in 1955 and mother, Elsie Phelps
A memorial service will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz, CA on Saturday September 7, 2013 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers contributions are preferred to Hospice of Santa Cruz, 940 Disc Dr., Scotts Valley, CA 95066
