56 Year Resident of Santa Cruz County
Services will be held in La Selva Beach on December 28th for Richard Kanto who passed away peacefully at his home with his beloved family at his bedside, following a lengthy battle with brain cancer. Born in Astoria, Oregon, he was 72 years old.
In 1965, he married the love of his life, Linda Jean Urbani, and the couple have been residents of Santa Cruz County for the past 52 years. Mr. Kanto has resided in Santa Cruz County for the past 56 years; graduating from San Lorenzo Valley High School and attending Cabrillo College. For many years, he worked with A.P. Desano and Sons, and served his country in the US Navy. Following his duties in the service, he began a career that spanned over 21 years with the University of California Observatories and retired as a machinist of the Lick Observatory. He leaves many dear friends and colleagues in the observatory sciences, whose friendships he greatly treasured.
Mr. Kanto had a great passion for both soccer and travel. He was an accomplished sculptor, and enjoyed drawing and painting. He will always be remembered by those he cherished, for his love of animals, and his very kind heart. He and Linda were members of La Selva Beach Community Church.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Kanto of La Selva Beach, and his two brothers; Ron Kanto of Washington and Jon Kanto of Arkansas, along with many loving extended family members. Mr. Kanto was preceded in death by his son Barry Kanto in 2002. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the wonderful care given by Hospice of Santa Cruz County and all those who called on him during his brave battle.
Friends and family gather to say farewell and wish him blessings on to his new journey on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at La Selva Beach Community Church (26 Florida Ave.) beginning at 3 p.m. Burial services will be held prior to the ceremony, as he will be laid to rest beside his son Barry at the Oakwood Cemetery in Santa Cruz. Any kind acts of charity may be made in his memory to the or La Selva Beach Community Church
