Lewis Weinstein Obituary

Lewis Gene Weinstein
Apr. 29, 1934 - Jan. 17, 2018
Resident of Aptos
Lewis Gene Weinstein, came into this world in Detroit on April 29, 1934, and left this world on January 17, 2018, in Santa Cruz, California. In his short time on earth, he helped to make this world a far better place, and helped improve the lives of countless people he came in contact with.
He was the son of Martha (Lipshitz) Weinstein and Milton Weinstein, and went to Central High School in Detroit, graduating in 1952. He then went on to earn
a Law Degree from Wayne State University in Detroit.
He could have joined his Father's and Uncle's law firm, but being the independent soul he was throughout his life, he needed to be on his own. He spent time in the Army, stationed in Texas, but didn't enjoy night duty in the desert, and managed to use his typing skills to become a clerk.
Lewis enjoyed working with and helping people, so when he got back to Michigan, he worked for and received a Masters in Social Work. In the early 1960s, he moved to California and worked for Agnews State Hospital in Santa Clara.
He never imposed his will on his many clients, encouraging them to "do their own thing," just as he did throughout his life. He was generous in giving to charities that he believed were doing good in the world.
He retired when he was sixty-two, loved his creek side home in Aptos, and enjoyed hearing the nearby ocean. He was an avid hiker, a tenacious table tennis player, and was in fairly good health most of his life.
His life was filled with his rescued cats, and a multitude of long-term friends. They would gather around Lew, whether it be on Friday night at the Catalyst, or in his comfortable, warm, inviting home.
He leaves many loyal friends behind who dearly miss him, as does his long-term companion Delayne "Lillie" Auerbach.
