EDNA ROBERTSON Obituary

EDNA CATHERINE ROBERTSON
1919-2013

Edna Robertson died February 3, 2013, in Eugene, Oregon, of age-related causes.

She was born in Hampton, Iowa, October 24, 1919, to Anna Elizabeth Stewart Bowen and Benjamin Kemp Bowen. Following graduation from high school in Washington, D.C., she studied two years on a scholarship at the Corcoran School of Art, and later at the Chicago Art Institute.

Edna met Alan Herbert Robertson while they both lived in an artists’ commune in Chicago, and they married August 19, 1942, in Waukegan, Illinois. Following World War II, Alan and Edna raised their two daughters in Chicago, until the family moved to Santa Fe in 1957.

Edna’s worked twenty years at the New Mexico Museum of Fine Art, primarily as Curator of Collections. Her job blended her two great loves, art and museums. She formed many friendships in the arts community and wrote several museum publications as well as the book Artists of the Canyons and Caminos.

After retirement she was honored as a “Living Treasure of Santa Fe” and joined the First Presbyterian Church, where she became an elder. In 1994 she moved to Eugene, Oregon, to live near family.

Edna was fiercely independent, quick-witted, deeply philosophical, and a gifted artist and musician. She was generous with her time and volunteered for many causes in both Santa Fe and Eugene.

Edna is preceded in death by her husband Alan and her brothers J. Carl, Robert E., Donald H., and Benjamin S. Bowen. She is survived by her daughters Sarah Ann Nestor and Katherine Jean “Kate” (Steven “Zeke”) Pryka, grandchildren Michael M. (Malkah) Nestor, Nicholas I. (Cindy) Seigal, and Anna R. Pryka, as well as great-grandchildren Hatty, Eva, Esme, Audrey, and Piper.

The family will hold a private burial of her ashes. Donations in her memory may be made to the Santa Fe Public Library or another local charity.

Published by Santa Fe New Mexican from Feb. 24 to Feb. 26, 2013.

It was with sadness that I read of the passing your wonderful mother. Please accept my deepest sympathies. She had such a wonderful life doing something she felt very passionate about - the world of art. How fortunate you and your family were to have her live such a long life and be able to share in it.
