JACKSON, BILL
WILBUR BUERKENS BILL JACKSON MAY 2, 1923 - MAY 24, 2016 The most gracious, strong, sweet, and loving man one could know has gone to heaven to be with his beautiful wife. Born in Owasa, Iowa to Esther Bear and Guy Jackson, Bill was the middle child with two older brothers and two younger sisters. He grew up in the small town of Eldora, Iowa. Bill met the love of his life, Lois Marie "Birdie" Kawata in 1951 and were married within a few months on January 6, 1952. Anyone who met Birdie and Bill could immediately sense how much they truly adored each other. They lived in Nebraska, then Iowa, and finally settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1957 where they raised their three wonderful children with a lot of love and laughter. Bill joined the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1943 at the age of 19. He was part of the early waves of assault troops for many Pacific Island beach landings including Tawara Atoll, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. He was injured in combat in October 1944 for which he received the Purple Heart and was treated and returned to combat before being honorably discharged in February 1946. Bill passed peacefully at the age of 93 with his close-knit family he proudly raised at his side. He was preceded in death by his wife Birdie by almost five years. He is survived by three wonderful children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandson. Children are: Carrie Baumgart (husband Chris Baumgart; daughter Kelly Donnelly, her husband Chris and their son Gavin), Celia Jackson (husband Joe Salazar; daughters Laura and Andi Salazar), Greg Jackson (wife Debra Jackson; sons Blake and Paul). There will be a celebration of life at Rivera Family Chapel on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 12:30 PM followed by a committal service at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Many thanks to the wonderful caregivers at Pacifica Senior Living of Santa Fe and Heritage Hospice for all the incredible patience, friendship, and humor they shared with the fine gentleman they called Wilbur. They became his second family. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heritage Home Healthcare and Hospice in memory of Bill Jackson would be meaningful to the family.
