STEVEN JAY VON STEIN Steven Jay Von Stein, retired civil engineer and long-time Santa Fe resident, died unexpectedly on November 12, 2012 in Santa Fe. Born in Portsmouth, VA, to a Navy family, Steve's childhood was spent in several locations: Norfolk, VA; Philadelphia; Pine Beach, NJ; and Atsugi, Japan. In 1959, the family settled permanently in Austin, TX, where Steve completed his education. After receiving a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas
at Austin, Steve went to work with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Most of his long career with the FHWA was spent in Santa Fe. Besides his work, Steve's life in Santa Fe was centered around his participation in sports, especially tennis, woodworking, and enjoying the outdoors through hiking and biking. Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Evelyn Von Stein of Austin, TX. He is survived by his sister, Alison von Stein of Austin; his sister, Fern Ramirez and her husband Arthur; and nephew David Ramirez and his wife Marie and their children Brigette and Preston. Steve's absence will be deeply felt by them as well as his friends and acquaintances. A Memorial service in Steve's honor will be held on Saturday, December 1, at 2 p.m. at the Lodge at Santa Fe, 750 N. St. Francis Dr, Santa Fe.
