Anna G. D'Anna March 29, 1915 - May 7, 2012 Anna G. D'Anna was born March 29, 1915 in Smithfield, La. She was the 7th of 11 children born to Maria Lucido and Leonardo Giovingo, who had immigrated to the U.S. as children. Shortly after Anna was born, the family moved to the small farming community of Independence, La., where Anna lived most of her life. Anna was the first member of her family to graduate from high school. It was at the graduation rehearsal that she met her future husband, Joseph A. D'Anna, whom she married in July of 1936. Anna and Joe moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1937 to find work during the Great Depression. They remained there until 1943, when they returned to Independence prior to Joe's entering the army during World War II. Anna worked outside of the home most of her adult life, including about 35 years at Amite Building and Supply, where she managed the business's daily office functions. In 1980 Anna had the distinction of becoming the first female council member in Independence, La. She was appointed to fill, temporarily, the position of her husband - who died in office, and she was elected in the subsequent special election. Anna moved to Los Alamos in November of 1997 to be near her family. In addition to her life-long interest in cooking and baking, she enjoyed going to the White Rock Senior Center and talking with friends and family. She had been living at Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation facility for about a year when she died at Los Alamos Medical Center from a sudden illness. Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, and by her 10 siblings. She is survived by her son, Joseph, Jr., and his wife, Lee; granddaughter, Collette (Scott) Chamberlain, and Collette's sons, Leo Dudziak and David Chamberlain; grandson, Joseph D'Anna, III (Cathy Crane), and his twin daughters, Ashley and Samantha; a number of nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. A Funeral Mass will be offered in Independence, La. on Tuesday, May 15, at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, and Anna will be entombed with her late husband at Colonial Cemetery in Independence following the service. A Mass also will be offered in Anna's behalf at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in White Rock on June 19, 2012, at 9 a.m. Friends are invited to attend.
