ESTEBAN ROYBAL Esteban (Steve) Roybal, age 93 of Pecos, NM went to be with our Lord on February 18, 2013. He was born in Pecos, NM on November 28, 1919 to the late Guadalupe Roybal and Maria (Moya) Roybal. He is survived by Marie (Vigil), his loving wife of 54 years. He is also survived by his daughters Julie Roybal (Billy Vigil) of Pecos, Lillian Anaya (Mel) of Edgewood, NM, Jeanette Roybal of Orange CA, sons Steven Roybal (Janet) and Eric Roybal, brothers Frank Roybal (Dolores), Gene Roybal (Helen), Gilbert Roybal (Viola) all of Pecos as well as sisters Antonia Wood of Santa Fe, NM, Connie Quintana (Eliseo) of Los Lunas, NM, Mary Brackins of Mobile, AL., Angie Chavez (Eddie) of Albuquerque and brother-in-law William Wade. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, four great-grand children and numerous relatives and friends. Steve was preceded in death by his wife of 9 years, Consuelo (Flores), son Joseph Roybal, his father Guadalupe, mother Maria, sisters Nemesia Wade, Cecilia Gonzales, Pita Armijo, brother Benito Roybal, brothers- in-law, Louis Armijo, Billy Wood, Thomas Gonzales, Arsenio Vigil, Arturo Vigil, Antonio Vigil and sister-in-law Rose Vigil, father-in-law Pete Vigil and mother-in-law Julianita Vigil. As a member of the 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Steve fought in North Africa and Italy during WWII from 1942 to 1945. After his discharge, he worked as Ranch Manager for the Friedman's Rancho Posada from 1947-1997. He was a lifelong cattleman, loved the mountains and rode horseback into his 80's. He loved camping, fishing and was well known for his hunting success. Steve worked hard his entire life and was an excellent provider for his family. He was a loving father, husband and friend. His love for life and for his family and his strong will became even more apparent as his health began to fail; he proved to be a fighter until his last day and was fiercely independent. He was rugged and strong, yet kind and gentle and very humble, never wanting to attract attention to himself. Services will take place on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at St. Anthony's Church in Pecos with a Rosary at 11:30 AM and the Eulogy immediately following. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 PM and internment will follow at the Pecos Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Gilbert Roybal, Gene Roybal, Frank Roybal and William Wade. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pecos Valley Medical Center at P.O. Box 710, Pecos, NM 87552 and indicate it's a memorial in Steve's honor.
