James Dwayne "Jim" Welch Age 76, who had made Santa Fe his home since 1994, passed away November 23rd, 2012. He died peacefully at home, amid the love, prayers and songs of his family and friends. Known to his grandchildren and Santa Fe family as "Big Daddy", he was an avid sports fan, especially of his beloved Texas Longhorns, and the Dallas Cowboys. He was a meticulous landscaper, a sharp dresser, and a proud member of the Santa Fe Men's Camerata choral group. Born in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Reverend Jack A. and Annie Welch, Jimmy was raised in Lubbock, Texas, where he achieved renown as an all-American football player for State Championship teams at Lubbock High School. During his college days at the University of Texas, he was most proud of his affiliation with the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and his friendship with coach Darrell Royal. He retired to Santa Fe after a distinguished career in the steel industry. He was a devoted husband and caretaker to Shirley Marion Welch, his wife of 55 years; an exemplary father to his children Sheila Welch Fordyce, twin sons Jeff Welch and Jack Welch; loving grandfather of Adam, Bryan, Austin, and Kate Welch; and loyal brother to Wendell and Gene Welch. He was predeceased by his younger sisters, Mary Welch and Betty Bogue. At his request, there was no funeral service. Friends wishing to make a memorial donation are encouraged to either select their favorite charity, or to consider supporting the Santa Fe Men's Camerata.
