EDMUND (DAS) MARKUS FEBRUARY 2, 2013 Edmund (Das) Markus, devoted family man, passed away on February 2, 2013 surrounded by loved ones. He was 93. The son of one of the first Jewish architects in Toronto, Das (aka Eddie) flew bomber planes for the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII before settling in Montreal. There he raised a family with his first wife, Baila Markus, and started the advertising firm, Markus Industries (later Markus Direct Marketing). In the '70s he spent time in India and became a devotee of Neem Karoli Baba (aka Maharaji).For the following two decades he raised Belgian draft horses in Abercorn, Quebec. During this period Markus Farms became a central gathering place for the local community and for Maharaji devotees returning from India. In 1981 he met his second wife, Jill Markus, with whom he raised another generation of children. In the late '80s the family moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Das lived until his passing. He is preceded by his brother Harry, and survived by his wife Jill and his five children, Mitchell, Douglass, Louise, David, and Samuel in addition to his nephew, niece, 7 grandchildren and 4 (soon to be 5) great-grandchildren. A mentor to many, he is remembered as a source of great wisdom, strength, humor, practicality, and generosity.
