STEPHIE SALAZAR Stephie Salazar, 88, of Santa Fe, passed away unexpectedly on April 13, 2013 with all of her family at her side. She was born on September 14, 1924 in San Ildefonso, NM to Juan and Kate Duran. After moving to Santa Fe at age 12, she attended Leah Harvey and Santa Fe High, and went on to study at the University of New Mexico. Stephie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be incredibly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Alex Salazar. They were married on May 3, 1952. Together they raised six children: Yvonne Shinas (Jim), Phillip Salazar (Alexine), Irene Maldonado (Robert), Christine Romero (Gilbert), Marcy Ojinaga (Sam), and Marcia Martin. She was blessed with 13 grandchildren: Shannon Smyth, Lawrence Smyth (Kameka), Katelyn Bird (Gavin), James Shinas, Steven Ojinaga, Kathryn Sandoval (Sam), Lynda Romero, Daniel Ojinaga, Diego Romero, Stacy Martin, John David Salazar, Amy Martin, and Alex Antonio Salazar; and 5 great-grandchildren: Tamiera Smyth, and Tina, Tony, Brooklyn and Bailey Bird. Stephie was preceded in death by her parents, infant twins sons, John and David; brothers: Juan, Joe, Peter, Frank and Victor Duran; and her sister, Roberta Gonzales. She leaves behind her siblings: Dan Duran (Mary Ellen), Evelyn Rivera (Ray) and Ida Chavez, and in-laws; Solomon Gonzales, Mary Duran, Joe Salazar (Celia), Henry Salazar (June), Manuel Salazar, Raymond Salazar (Evila) and Lyda Byers. Serving as pallbearers are: Lawrence Smyth, Steven Ojinaga, Diego Romero, John David Salazar, Samuel Sandoval and George Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers include: James Shinas, Daniel Ojinaga, Gerard Gonzales and Edward "Buddy" Gonzales. The family wishes to extend their extreme gratitude to all those who have reached out and supported them during this most difficult time. A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, April 16 at St. Anne's Catholic Church at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church, Wednesday, April 17 at Noon, burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers make donations to the Carmelite Sisters.
