Kathy Destefani Obituary

Kathy Lynn Destefani
Kathy Lynn Destefani (Lesourd) daughter of Elmo and Evelyn Destefani, born on August 23, 1948 in Bakersfield, CA. peacefully left this life and ended her battle with cancer surrounded with the love and blessings of her family, soul-mate Ernest Brewer, and a New Life Church Minister.
Kathy grew up on the farm in Old River, attended Lakeside Elem., SHS class of '66, Bakersfield J.C. and received her B.S. degree in Education at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
Her first teaching assignment was Lompoc J.H.S. Kathy went on to fill her life with adventures while also substitute teaching in Central Coast Districts and in El Dorado County.
Kathy and her sons returned to Arroyo Grande in '92 to teach full time K-6 in Santa Maria Bonita School District (most recently Alvin Elem.) until her retirement in 2008. Students saw a special person in Kathy, who worked hard to enrich their school experience.
After retiring, she divided her time between her homes in Arroyo Grande and Placerville. Although she enjoyed her ocean view, her heart belonged to the mountains and peaceful surroundings of Placerville.
Kathy's adventures were short lived when she was diagnosed with cancer in ‘08. All, who knew her were aware of her tenacity, stubborn independence, and her true belief in positive thinking. Kathy chose to stay in her A.G. home, recieving treatment by local doctors, and accepting the challenge of taking a very harsh path of treatment. She lived her positive attitude everyday until her death and because of that she was able to enjoy 2 years of a normal life. She inspired and amazed all with her example of her faith in her doctors and her Lord. She lived everyday as a special gift!
When not gathering a posse of friends, Kathy went on some wild adventures whose stories kept us supplied with lots of laughs. At age 30, she back-packed many months in Europe without an itinerary which scared the wits out of her parents! She checked sky diving off her bucket list on her 40th birthday. When her safari to Africa was canceled because of an "Orange Alert" she went anyway. She flew to Japan to bring in the 2000 New Year only to be too sick with a fever to watch it happen! Anyone who was a passenger in her car knew about her inability to follow a map or allow anyone to help her thus making more humorous memories.
She was compulsive, frugal, a workaholic, creative, and dearly loved by family and friends. She prayed for a quick gentle death in her bed and angels must have been pressing all green lights because it was granted.
Preceding in her death: her dad Elmo, grandparents Souza and Destefani, aunts, uncles, cousin, and her sons' father Jean Marie Lesourd. She is survived by her mother Evelyn, son Nicola and his fiancé Jamie and daughter Ashlyn, son Brodie Lesourd and his sons Bryson and Micah, sister Linda , uncle Melvin , cousins, relatives in Italy and France, her pals, and Seally her cat. Her heart remains with her beloved Ernie. Thank you to his dear mother Margaret for her kindness to Kathy. Kathy's family sends thanks to Dr. Thomas Spillane (S.L.O), Dr. Sheri Marquez (Santa Maria), and their associates and staff. A special hug to Michelle Ellis, Hearst Cancer Resource Center S.L.O. Thank you to the minister from New Life Church for "knowing" that you should arrive a few minutes before Kathy slipped away to comfort her with prayer. A very heartfelt thank you to Hospice of the Central Coast and Visiting Angels employees for their guiding hands which aided the family with the gentle care of our Kathy.
A private celebration will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hearst Cancer Resource Center, 1941 Johnson Ave. or Hospice Partners of the Central Coast 277 South St. # R, both San Luis Obispo, CA.

Dear Sister, Time has added more missed times without you. If you knew how much I love you, I miss you and how much I have needed your silly ideas, good advice, and shoulder to lean on. You were my best friend and I have needed you... your shoulder so many times over these challenging years. All these wonderful messages sent here were so true about you. I hope someday I will be able to hear you say "Anyway" with whatever you want to say next! Love, DeeDee

I met Kathy as freshmen at South High in 1962. I had never met anyone more full of life and adventure as Kathy. As we all graduated and went wherever, we grew older and more sedate in our lives. But not our girl!! I could count on Kathy to give me good kick in the bum, so to speak, and say "Get out and have some FUN!!" Kathy never aged in her spirit. I guess that's why I'm having such a hard time saying goodbye, a young spirit cut too short. I know many loving arms were there to welcome her Home. Sharon Kimble

It is so nice to read these touching entries in Kathy's guest book. I met Kathy in 1972. From time to time over the years, we would be close and then get too busy with our lives and then be close again.. Whenver we would see each other we would pick up our converstion where we left off.. whether it was was a month, a year or several years. I am glad she went to Heaven peacefully and without too much pain. I just wish she could have stayed here with us a bit longer. Kathy was the kind of friend you could count on, no matter what. And boy do I have some great stories about the adventures of Kathy! I think of her and all of the crazy things we did or thought about doing and I smile. I can hear her laugh as she says "Hey you!" as she watches down on me and all of us who loved her. She is organizing and brightening up Heaven as we speak.

Thank you all for your loving remarks and happy memories of my sister ! Reading them made me smile! If you think she was quite "a character" just think what it was like to be her older sister all those years ! "Wisecracking" runs in the family..we learned it from our Dad! Kath was THE BEST SISTER I could ever wish for !

I met Kathy in 1975 when I was completing my student teaching in Lompoc... our paths crossed many times in the years after & I met her boys, Nick & Brodie while working at Judkins Middle School & Arroyo Grande High School.
Kathy was a "spit-fire" & wanted only the "best for her students" as well as her boys!
Sadly, I lost track of Kathy in 2000 & was shocked to read of her ill health & passing. My heart goes out to her family & close friends - her "sparkly" personality will be missed!

As I read everyone's comments about Kathy, they all ring true for me. So many ways to describe her presence...energetic, joyful, spunky (red head of course!). I too remember the twinkle in her eye.
Prayers for comfort and peace for her family.

Kathy was one wonderfully loving, and possibly the most outrageously joyous, woman I have worked with. Her joy and energy were contagious! At a much-deserved travel retreat to the CA Reading Conference, in Asilomar, we and other Alvin teachers sitting cross-legged on the floor, had gathered around a crackling fire anxious to learn a card game. Kathy was so anxious to play she’d throw a card in no matter the turn, crack us all up, and then repeat her modified “play,” again and have us all in stitches! She brought out the best in everyone; her students, friends and family.
In the words of Patsy Clairmont in "Outrageous Joy," Kathy knew joy was like a bouquet of balloons from Jesus meant to hearten us. She showed us the example of entering into “our joy” as we determine to tilt our hearts upward, for an upward tilt allows us to receive all He has to offer…He gives us joy, and then we choose to respond out of it. Kathy’s life example can show us the more receptive we are to the Lord, the more likely we are to have the “joy, joy, joy, joy” way down in the depths of our hearts. Peace and prayers for all to live in her legacy of joy.

To all her family: My daughters and I were so fortunate to have the opportunity to get to know you again. You were just a little girl when I left Bakersfield, and to get to know you again and to share you with my girls was a gift that I will charish always. You will be missed by many and especially me and my family. May God grant you all peace in the New Year. Love to all of you, Annette & Leo, Carrie Lynn's and LeAnn's Families.

I was privileged to work with Nick and Brodie at Grover Heights School. I remember the telling of the Wombat. Then I met Kathy at my first job in SMBSD at Fesler Jr. High. She and I became friends there and the friendship continued on as we transferred to Alvin. We prayed together with a group of teachers before our slated work time. I followed her in our rotation in year round. It was hard to get to a space to put my stuff because of all the great hands on materials she provided for her students. But, she was always easy-going and allowed me to store my hands on materials. Kathy and I continued our friendship as her dad was in Arroyo Grande Care Center at the same time my grandma was. We've seen each other at New Life Church in Pismo and continued to pray for each other. We loved our sons. We enjoyed making learning fun for our students. We love the Lord Jesus as our Saviour. I will pray that God will bring comfort to the family and that they will know she is continuing her joyous laughter in Heaven.

Our prayers are with the family. Kathy and I had many wonderful times together at Alvin, and away. She was a vivacious woman, who loved to speak her mind. I remember her making social studies real for her students, by bringing in supplies, and having them panning for gold in the sandbox. I also remember attending many teacher trainings with her. She would say that the company didn't know what they were doing, and would take all of the papers out of the binder, and "organize" them for the company. She had her own systems! She always made me laugh.

Kathy always greeted me with a twinkle in her eye...ready to share a joke or a humorous vignette of her life's journey (her favorite was her adoration for the men in her life). I liked her because I could count on her for more than a moment of laughter, which is such a healthy gift.
Even as her illness became more serious, her notes to me were upbeat and positive. She spoke with such happiness about remodeling her home up in Placerville and the love and support of her talented boyfriend and loving family.
God has a fun loving angel with him now. Her life was so brief with us, yet so full. I will carry her memory with me forever!

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
Kathy was one of my teachers at Alvin School. She was very supportive and always willing to go that extra mile for the sake of her students. She spoke her mind when she felt that we were not doing everything for our students. Kathy had an excellent sense of humor, always willing to help out, and enjoyed teaching. She got along well with staff and parents. It was a pleasure having her on my staff at Alvin School

Kathy was a funny, energetic and lovely woman I had the privilege to call a friend. More important, she was a good friend to my wife, Anna, from their Cal Poly days. She showed great courage and fortitude in fighting and enduring her illness and she was an inspiration to her students and all those who knew her. No doubt, we all have a funny story of two to tell about our conversations with Kathy. Suffice it to say she was humorous, a delight to be around and that she was taken, although too early, at HER proper time, and we will all be the less because of it.
