Olive Jones Obituary

Olive "Jean" Jones

December 24, 1929 – October 1, 2010
Our dear mother, grandmother, and sister, Jean Jones, 80, passed away peacefully in her home on October 1 surrounded by her loved ones.
Jean was born December 24, 1929 in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Oliver and Daisy Ollman. She was the 2nd youngest of seven children, and maintained a close and loving relationship with all her siblings. As a young woman she loved to dance and spend time skating at the roller rinks that were so popular in her youth.
While she worked at various times in her long life as an executive secretary, bookkeeper, real estate agent, purchasing agent and bookstore owner-manager, what she loved and enjoyed most were the many years spent as a homemaker raising her two children.
Jean lost her husband Asa E. Jones in a tragic accident in 1966, and later she remarried and helped raise her new husband's three youngest children—Steve, Debi, and Donnie, and became good friends with his oldest daughter Linda.
When Jean retired, she took great pleasure and pride as a volunteer for the Central Coast Literacy Council teaching adults how to read and write. She enjoyed knitting and made dozens of beautiful and finely crafted sweaters, afghans, and scarves for her family and friends. She also enjoyed watching professional golf and tennis on TV, playing sudoku, and working jigsaw puzzles. She closely followed the national political scene as an Independent and took seriously her responsibility to be aware of crucial issues and vote her values.
Jean was best known for her keen intelligence, sense of humor, and her generous and loving heart. She always tried to help those in need, even when she had little herself to spare. She had a deep and abiding faith in God, who brought her great comfort and healing in difficult times.
Jean is preceded in death by her brother Vernon Ollman and sisters Lois Csiky and June Guiel, as well as her beloved husband Asa E. Jones.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Rita Jones (Rochester, Minnesota); her daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Dale Brasket (Santa Maria); her grandchildren Kelli and Christopher Brasket, and her great-grandson (Chris's son) Jayden. She is also survived by her sister Louella Dixon, brothers Melvin and Leonard Ollman, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 7. All those who knew Jean and wish to honor her memory are invited to a celebration of her life on Friday, October 8, 4 PM, at the Oak Knoll Haven community center, 4845 S. Bradley Road in Orcutt. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the Central Coast Literary Council www.centralcoastliteracy.org/

All of you who knew her well are blessed, I only got to see her twice at very young ages.

A toast to another strong Ollman woman!

I feel very fortunate to have re-connected with Aunt Jean those few days last summer at the Cousin's Reunion in Santa Maria. She was so happy and full of smiles and a joy to be around. Today I called the Central Coast Literacy Council to make a donation in Aunt Jean's name. When I mentioned Aunt Jean's name, the woman I was talking to knew her well from when she was a volunteer there. She said that she'll never forget the laughs they shared together and how much she enjoyed working with Aunt Jean. Aunt Jean will be missed.

Aunt Jean, I will miss the glimmer in your eyes and your feistiness.
