Phyllis Vaniter Obituary

PHYLLIS VANITER
Phyllis Vaniter, 84 of Casmalia, CA, passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at her home with her loving family by her side.
Phyllis was born September 4, 1926 in Clara, Iowa to Roy and Esther Peterson. She was raised and educated in Hanska, MN where she was Valedictorian of her graduating high school class. She married Palmer Sorheim in 1943 and they moved to Casmalia, CA in 1953 where Phyllis worked in the grocery industry. She was very active in her childrens lives serving with the PTA and the school board in Casmalia. She was later employed at Vandenberg AFB as a clerk for many years in the commissary. Palmer passed away in 1964. She then married Kenneth Vaniter in 1965. They had many happy years together. Phyllis and Kenneth worked together as custodians with the Casmalia School District before retiring. Kenneth passed away in 2001.
Phyllis loved bowling and bowled on many leagues during her lifetime. She was a member of the Mothers Club in Casmalia. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She also enjoyed going to Las Vegas, the Chumash Casino and reading. Every Wednesday evening all of her children would go to her house and would spend the evening with her. This is something that she would look forward to.
She is survived by her children Kristine Johnson (Robert) of Santa Maria, Paulette Postiff (James) of Casmalia, Steven Sorheim of Casmalia, Kevin Sorheim (Nancy) of Casmalia and Katrina McClure (Robert) of Casmalia, brother Roy Peterson II (Lucille) of Windom, MN and sister Dolores McCullen of Casper, WY., 14 grandchildren and 18 great-granchildren.
She is preceded by her first husband Palmer Sorheim, second husband Kenneth Vaniter, parents Roy and Esther Peterson and brother Leonard Peterson.
A funeral service will be held Monday, November 22, 2010 at 1:30 pm at the chapel of the Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary with Pastor Clete Doyal of the First Christian Church officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Memory Gardens of the Dudley-Hoffman Columbarium.
Memorial contributions in memory of Phyllis Vaniter may be made to the American Cancer Society, 426 E. Barcellus St. Ste. 305, Santa Maria, CA 93454 or the Disabled American Veterans, C/O American Legion, 220 W. Tunnell, Santa Maria, CA 93458.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, Crematory and Memory Gardens.

Phyllis was one very special person who would bring joy and love into everyone's life. She was an inspiration to me all the years I knew her. I always looked forward to seeing or talking to her. I will deeply miss her. She will always live within my heart. I love you Phyllis! Donna Hazard
