Ted Scott Obituary

Ted O'Neal Scott
Born in Naylor Mo. April 20, 1928. Ted enlisted in the Navy right out of high school where he served on the U.S.S Bottineau. He was an Atomic Veteran and witnessed the nuclear test blasts in the Bikini atolls in 1946 during Operation Crossroads.
He met Louise Wagner while working in Trona Ca. and they married in 1953. They moved to Orange County where they raised 7 children, while Ted worked for Wilshire/ Gulf Oil Co. Beginning in the 1980's, Ted and Louise began to make trips to the Navajo Indian reservation in Arizona and became good friends with the nuns at Our Lady of Fatima convent. In all, they made over 30 trips with food and clothing.
After 30+ years in the oil refinery business, Ted retired. In 1985, he and Louise moved to Santa Maria where he quickly became active in the local Elks Lodge. He was originally initiated in the B.P.O.E. in 1953 but the time constraints of work and family kept him from becoming very active. After retirement, he was able to devote much more time to the organization. He had always had a love of history so becoming the chapter's historian was a perfect match. Besides historian, he had held many other committee positions including secretary and director of Elks Recreation and editor of the Elk Horn with Lodge #1538. Through his vision and perseverance, Elks Recreation was able to acquire and receive permits for the 107 acres that encompass their current Rodeo Grounds and Event Center. His efforts to serve his home lodge and town have not gone unnoticed. In 1991, Ted received the Elks Lodge Citizen of the Year Award, he received the Mayor's Tourism Award from the Chamber of Commerce, he has acted as Grand Marshal of the Elks Rodeo & Parade and was also awarded Elk of the Year.
He was an avid reader and NASCAR fan.
He is preceded in death by his devoted wife of 41 years, Louise, whom he had missed terribly since her passing. He leaves behind a sister Vella Wheeler, 7 children: Katherine Scott, Debra Van Till, Neal Scott, Judy McKay, Lonnie Scott, Matthew Scott and Margaret Evans, 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by many.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to Elks Recreation in his name.
A memorial service and reception will be held Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge #1538. Private burial will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, Crematory and Memory Gardens.

While with the Santa Maria Lodge I met Ted. I always enjoyed talking with him and his desire to make Santa Maria and the rodeo better. I really enjoyed the Elk Horn under his direction. He was a caring and committed man. I am saddened at hearing of his passing and will miss him
