Theodore Merkel Obituary

Theodore ("Ted") Merkel, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away October 26, 2010 at Marian Medical Center after a short illness with his family at his side.
Ted was born on Feb 25, 1923 to Jacob F. Merkel and Flossie Marie Stevens in Coldwater Township, North Dakota. Ted proudly served his country as part of the 565th Antiaircraft Battalion, Patton's Third Army during WWII and as part of the occupation forces after. He moved to California to pursue his occupation as a barber and was the owner & proprietor of Ted's Barbershop in Granada Hills for many years. He retired, sold his barbershop and moved to Santa Maria in 1990 where he became an avid woodworker. Ted and Dorothy have been residents of Santa Maria since, and are members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Nipomo. Ted was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 23 years, Dorothy in 2009.
Ted is survived by his children, Dan Merkel, David Merkel, Richard Merkel, Ronny Merkel, Robin Merkel Hipps, Randy Merkel his step sons Tom Coleman, Dick Coleman and Roy Colement, his brother Alvin Merkel, sisters Dorothy Neuhardt, Emma Olek, Marion Martion, Frances Scwan and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family requests that anyone wishing to share a written story, photograph or other memorabilia please bring these with you to the service as the family will compile a book of memories as a keepsake in honor and celebration of Ted's life.
Viewing hours will be Sunday, November 7, 2010 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, November 8, 2010 at 10:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Nipomo. Burial will follow in the Santa Maria Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, Crematory and Memory Gardens.
