SARATOGA SPRINGS - Sgt. John R. "Jack" Bates, TPD retired, 67, of Casino Drive died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Evergreen Commons after a long illness.
Born in Troy, he was a son of the late Anthony and Helen Flanigan Bates. He was a 1964 graduate of Lansingburgh High School and was also a graduate of Hudson Valley Community College.
Jack served for 21 years with the Troy Police Department and retired in 1993 as a sergeant. He had also been employed with the New York State Park Police in Saratoga and at the former Berns Camera Store in Troy. In his earlier years, Jack was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and New York State Department of Transportation.
He was a member of the Troy Police Benevolent Association and a former member of the Civil Air Patrol.
Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force
and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was an excellent amateur photographer and an air show enthusiast and enjoyed attending the events with his brothers.
He is the beloved husband of 44 years of Frances Fernet Bates; devoted father of Heather K. Bates and Holly K. Bates of Saratoga Springs; and brother of Don A. Bates (Debby) of Clifton Park and the late Gary L. Bates. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Edna Fernet of Saratoga Springs; a sister-in-law, Martha Bates of Cambridge; his aunts, Alice Hickcox and Eileen Bates of Troy; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., Route 32, Waterford. Interment will follow at Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the funeral home.
