Florence Elizabeth Harshe Lima, OH - Florence Elizabeth Harshe died 10:55 p.m., Sunday March 17 at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home. She was 95. Miss Harshe, the daughter of Maud and Carl F. Harshe was born October 16, 1917 in Lima, Ohio. She was a graduate of Lima South High School and Ohio State University. She earned a graduate degree in Library Science at Case-Western University in Cleveland. She served as Head of Circulation at the Lima Public Library for six years, as Reference Librarian and Head of the Order Department at the Library of Hawaii, Honolulu, from 1947 -51, as Director of the New York State Regional Library Center (later North Country System) in Watertown, NY from 1951 – 1959 and as Director of the Southern Adirondack Library System in Saratoga Springs for 22 years. At the time of her retirement in 1980 the New York Legislature passed a legislative resolution commending her for an outstanding career in library service. She was honored by St. Lawrence University with a North Country Citizen's Award, by the Hudson-Mohawk Library Association with an outstanding Librarianship Award, and by the Saratoga Hospital as Volunteer of the year in 1982. She was actively professionally, holding offices in the New York Library Association, the American Library Association and the Capital District Library Council. She contributed articles and reports to professional journals and spoke at library conferences throughout the country. The New York State Board of Regents appointed her to the NYS Professional Librarians Examination Committee and to the NYS Advisory Committee for the Federal Library Services and Construction Act. The Capital District Library Council also appointed her to its Advisory Committee for Hospital Libraries where she served for many years. She was a member of the New York Library Association, the American Library Association, American Association of University Women, and the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer medical librarian at the Saratoga Hospital for 15 years and delivered Meals on Wheels for 17 years. She was interested in the arts, travel and reading. She is survived by a sister Kathleen Thomas of Lake Mary, FL as well as many nieces and nephews. Private graveside services and interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Saratoga Springs, New York, Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church or one's chosen Charity.
