SARATOGA LAKE - Andrew A. Panza, 87, of southern Saratoga Lake died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs, following a short illness.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born June 19, 1925, in Mechanicville, he was the son of the late Anthony Izzo and Josephine Panza and stepson of the late Anthony Gouckey.
Andrew was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Elsie E. Panza.
A Mechanicville High School graduate, Andrew enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in Normandy during World War II.
After returning home, he attended Siena College and rejoined the family business, Panza's Starlight Restaurant, located on the south shore of Saratoga Lake, where he and his wife continued his family's legacy as the proprietors of Panza's Restaurant for more than 60 years. The Panza family brought pizza to upstate New York in the 1890s, and up until recently you would see Andrew covered with flour either baking bread or making the pizza dough. He and Elsie received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York State Restaurant Association and were featured in numerous publications.
When he retired, the fourth generation took the reins and Panza's Restaurant will celebrate its 75th anniversary in April.
Survivors include his daughter, Pamela Panza of Saratoga Lake; his son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Dr. Jill Braverman-Panza of Clifton Park; his son, Michael J. Panza of Saratoga Springs; his grandchildren, Alexander Panza, Laura, Lisa and Michele Boiani; his great-grandchildren, Richard, Angelina and Molly; along with nieces, nephews and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at All Saints on the Hudson North Church (St. Peter's), 895 Hudson Ave., Stillwater.
Burial with full military honors will be held at Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held prior to the Mass from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
The Panza family requests that in lieu of flowers remembrances be made to The Wesley Foundation, 131 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, in loving memory of Andrew A. Panza.
